I mean, when you look back at record and all you would think "okay give him one more year" but at the time the team was a complete mess.
First of all, he had full player personnel control and was making some REALLY wild decisions that pissed the players off. The team was divided, the front office began to hate him, etc, etc. the list goes on.
I think the problem is that he thought he was much smarter than he really was. The guy was a great football mind no doubt, but he got really arrogant and tried to do shit that just doesn't fly in the NFL (like cutting key players to make statements).
