For some of the playoffs (can't remember if it started vs SEA or before that) he had to switch over to MLB a lot of the snaps. I originally threw out DT because of concerns about run defense and the potential lack of good ILBs available when you pick.

Depends on how far CBs/ILBs drop, there are a few solid ILBs worth a late 1st but there are also a lot of teams with ILB needs.

I trust my front office to make the right call. I personally don't think any ILBs would qualify as a BPA pick at 30 tbh. Just because a team has a need doesn't mean there is value there. I think the talent at that position will be fine in round 2. Personal opinion ofc. Who the fuck knows what will happen come the end of the month

Yeah... I'm a little concerned that if we don't draft our ILB in the 1st, we might have nothing left to choose from come round 2. Not hard to see 0 or maybe 1 ILB going in round 1 and then a flurry of ILB picks in the 2nd, kind of like what happened with TE last year. But I do agree that there will almost have to be significantly better value at CB in the 1st. I'm all for trading back a bit, but I say that almost every year, and it's much easier on paper than in reality to accomplish.

I really don't like going CB early. If you do that, you're essentially telling Hayward, who is in a contract year, that you don't believe he can be a starter for you, and the likliehood of him leaving in FA skyrockets. ILB or trade down pls.

That's valid. It may just light a fire under his ass though. And it is a business, as Ted has no problem reminding us every spring. Casey has not done a great job of staying healthy and the depth we enjoyed last year is just not there anymore.

It transitioned into that later, since they saw how much better the defense played when he was there. He had something like 9 of his 11 sacks after switching over and the defense averaged around 40 less rush yards. It's not ideal, but he's good enough to make it work if they can't get good play from the guys on the roster.

Yeah, but hopefully your roster works out such that he can primarily play one or the other (dude's a monster and could easily switch to ILB if you find a stud OLB).

Hard to know. Both CB and ILB would be solid picks, assuming someone worthwhile is there. Both big needs for the team.

I could easily see several ILBs go round 1 due to the fairly high need there. Many teams in the first half of the draft are also thinking about ILBs, so early 2nd could also be a slaughter for that position--or not. Hard to know what sort of meta-drafting approach the NFL will take this year...changes slightly every year. Last year was WRs out the ass. This year...who knows?

Or you're telling Hayward, who is in a contract year, that you need depth at the position because you lost two players who took a lot of snaps in 2014. Kendricks, Perryman, McKinney, Anthony, Thompson and Dawson are not worth it in the first imo. Quality starters but one of them will be available in round 2. BPA at 30 won't be an ILB imo

You're not drafting depth in the first though.

Just because Hayward wasn't technically listed as a starter doesn't mean he wasn't on the field often. If he jets next season and we don't have anyone to go opposite Shields, you better hope that ILB you snagged this year is a stud

It also doesn't mean he was on the field often, heh.

Regardless of what he does next season, I'd feel more comfortable with him starting and drafting an ILB earlier than I would stacking CB while keeping Clay inside, relying on the players on the roster to form a serviceable second ILB, hope that Peppers can continue to fight his age, and expect Neal and Perry to be serviceable outside.
