Our WR situation is not all that dire. With Streater returning from IR, we have several pretty good targets. James Jones stepped up last season, Streater has great hands, and TE Mychal Rivera is a good option in the passing game as well. Our 3rd string options are pretty solid, with Brice Butler coming up big in a few games and Andre Holmes has been everything we wanted. Out of the backfield both FBs on our roster have catching ability...RB remains a question mark. But really all we're missing in the passing game is someone with some speed. Our WRs are solid and use good body control and catch well, but nobody is really a deep threat. Carr had a pretty damn good season last year, in my opinion, especially since we didn't have a running game.
I think giving the Raiders offense a second dimension does way more for Carr than adding someone who would likely be a semi-reliable opportunity down field. Moving us to some 2nd or 3rd and manageables instead of 3rd and 10 after 2 0 yard runs could have a great impact on his development; not having to carry the whole team on your shoulders makes it easier to take some time and learn. Our WRs may be pretty average, but Carr got it done with average last year (and without, IMO, our best WR for the whole season). You know what didn't get it done? Our cobbling together of McFadden and Jones-Drew for some sort of Frankenstein's Monster approach to the RB spot. Turns out you need more than 2 uninjured legs, arms, and drops of talent between 2 "starting" players.
Picking up a 2nd round player who would spend time at 3rd or 4th WR won't do nearly as much as getting a player who would likely start at RB. A case could be made for a 1st round WR (Cooper, or a different one with a trade back), and he might start over Streater, but how much of an improvement would that be? We're still at 0 rushing potential despite having an OL that did a good job run blocking (and pass blocking, for that matter, way to go guys).
Whether or not we need a WR in the first 3 rounds is debatable. There's 0 reason to go for 2 in early rounds. Much better to draft 1 or 2 guys in later rounds and gamble on them. If they don't turn out, it's okay--we have enough to run an offense. Can the same be said of our RB situation?
The gripe from Raiders fans all season is that Carr didn't have any weapons... A high draft pick RB isn't going to change that, let alone one who has always been injury prone.
All of your guy's WRs would be 3rd or 4th string WRs on most teams in the league. Like I said, at the very best, they're average and that's talking about the best you guys got.
I forgot 1/2 of the other stuff you said because I mainly skimmed through the post. Sad on my part I know, but there's really no point trying to debate it with a fan of the team. We all look at our teams in the best light possible, but you guys don't have shit at WR lol. Streater coming back from IR? Great, another average at the very best WR to throw into the mix of WRs.
I'm probably coming off sounding like an asshole, but it is what it is. You guys had a very good draft this past draft. Mack is a stud, Carr looks like he can definitely be your franchise QB. You guys got what looks to be a long term player in Gabe Jackson on the OL and got what looks like some solid late round value in the back end of the draft.
