As opposed to signing a bunch of younger players that were available for longer term contracts?  There were several available mid-20's that we certainly could've thrown a lot of money at to lock up for 4-5 years.

You do make an excellent point, at least the contracts expire.  I was sort of hoping that we'd be able to make some longer-term agreements with the money, though, instead of essentially stalling by signing old players that won't improve our team significantly enough to make it competitive.  To me, it looks like we're throwing money away.

Then again, I guess this is California, welfare capital of the universe.  #OaklandEBT

well those mid 20s or so FAs probably wanted to go to a playoff team/contender

I feel like that's a steal for the Raiders. I don't think Schaub is that bad...

He was a very good quarterback prior to last season. Some people had him rated just below Tony Romo and Phillip Rivers on the outer edge of the top 10 quarterbacks in the game. But then the 2013 season happened and he played poorly but so did the entire team. Once Arian Foster went down with his injuries the Texans had no reliable running game to compliment him.

It's critical that you have a strong running game if you want Matt Schaub to succeed. His bread-and-butter plays are the play-action passes. He needs that to make big throws down the field and gain confidence. Once Schaub completes four or five passes in a row he can get red hot like the elite quarterbacks do. You can't expect him to just drop back in the pocket and pick teams apart like he used to do in his younger days. His arm strength has weakened as he's gotten older. He has to play within a West Coast offense style of offense.

Matt Schaub is very much a system quarterback at this point in his career. He can't extend plays so if a play breaks down he's going to be sacked or he has to get rid of the football very fast. He can't force bad throws which leads to a lot of pick sixes the other way.

Probably. I still think we could've gone after them more aggressively and tried to build for the future NOW instead of putting it off until the future is imminent.

GOOD THING WE HAVE MCFADDEN.

AFK suicide.

In all honesty I think he has more in the tank than most people give him credit for. Will he be near top 10? No, lol. But he'll be serviceable and be more like high teens/mid 20's.

OAKLAND RAIDERS ✔ @RAIDERS
Raiders Acquire QB Matt Schaub - official press release: http://bit.ly/1gjvH1F
4:02 PM - 21 Mar 2014

The 6-foot-5, 235-pounder is a two-time Pro Bowler, having earned the honors in 2009 and 2012. In 2009, Schaub set career highs in completions (396), attempts (583), yards (4,770), completion percentage (67.9 percent), touchdowns (29) and quarterback rating (98.6). His 4,770 yards led the NFL that season, making him the first Texans quarterback to accomplish the feat. He was also named the Pro Bowl MVP that year.

In 2011 and 2012, Schaub helped Houston to back-to-back AFC South titles, the franchise’s first and second division crowns. In 2012, he led the Texans to a franchise-best 12-4 record and an AFC Wild Card victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

There's good RB talent in this draft. We can get a good prospect in the 2nd-5th rounds.

There's also a few guys who haven't been signed yet. We could still go after Knoshon Moreno.

Matt Schaub is the best quarterback the Raiders have had since Rich Gannon. Well, okay. He's not the next Rich Gannon.

OK, this is what I don’t want to hear: Matt Schaub is going to be the next Rich Gannon.

Yeah, yeah, we know the tale: Older guy comes to Oakland with his career on life support. He revitalizes it, along with the entire franchise, goes on to win an MVP and takes Raider Nation to the Super Bowl. It’s an awesome story, and that’s why it doesn’t happen very often.

Instead, what Schaub is likely to become is the next Jason Campbell, Carson Palmer or Matt Flynn. Another so-so, more-problems-than-qualities quarterback who the Raiders traded for in a desperate attempt to find that Gannon magic.

When is this going to end?

Hey Oakland, another Gannon is not walking through those doors. Stop thinking he will in the form of another beat-down old dude. Schaub was a shell of himself last season in Houston. Why would Oakland, which is trying to build an offense and is far from a ready product, think it can fix him at the age of 32?

If the Raiders were fixated on continuing to get older all over the field -- a weird approach with a team with a ton of salary-cap room that hasn’t had a winning record since George W. Bush’s first administration -- I guess an argument could be made for Michael Vick. He’d be completely free (I know Schaub cost just a late-round pick, but the Raiders need the chance to develop every kid they can get their hands on) and Vick has some ability to make plays happen.

Schaub is a less-talented Palmer. He will occasionally tease, but is more likely to throw a pick-six than a touchdown. I really hope the Raiders don’t think this is the guy who is going to lead them back to the playoffs. All he is going to do it get cut in a couple of years, and then the Raiders will have to start over. Again.

The hope is that in those few years we find a nice rookie we want to develop. Schaub is nothing but a stop-gap, and I think everyone recognizes this except whomever wrote that article.
