Exactly, the slot is about running precise and perfect routes. It's one thing moving a WR to the slot, it's a whole different situation moving somebody to slot who has never played WR. He should know some routes, as he did play QB, but knowing and running routes correct are two completely different things.
There's a lot more to being a returner then just speed. You have to have patience, good vision and know when to go. Having great speed helps, but it also helps you run straight into the back of your blockers.
