No, you absolutely can build exclusively through the draft, and it is the best way of building a team to compete for long stretches instead of going all in for a window of 2-3 years. Teams just need to commit to a multi year rebuilding project rather than hiring a new HC and expecting him to make the playoffs in a year.

absolutely true, and all of this is evidenced by the teams that are perennial playoff contenders and the teams that try to make a big splash only to ruin themselves for a few years (Jets and Eagles are in the rebuilding stage from this, Cowboys are doing the spending to get themselves here in a few years).

/it's also how good teams that seemingly lose players every year stay competitive.

And the Browns are in a spot where they pretty much have to spend money. The cap floor starts this year, and they were over $20m under that number before today.

It's a yes and no really. The draft is the main part for successful team, but you still need to hit up FA for solid depth.

And to hit on your note about rebuilding. I agree 100%. Just look at my Jags. Caldwell came in and is blowing it up. Releasing guys left and right. Not going hard into FA on day 1. He wants to build it the right way, through the draft. I'll struggle through 1-2 years of a terrible team, to see continuous improvement. Rather then have 4 years or neutral. Not getting any better or worse.

How many teams have a franchise QB that they didn't get through the draft?

How many teams have a legitimate franchise QB?

Most get them through the draft, yes. But not all(Broncos, Saints, Bears),but its difficult to get that kind of player that can consistently take you to the playoffs. Unless you have the 1 or 2 pick and the timing is right.

You get that QB, and everything becomes 1000% easier

3 out of 15, not counting Kaep + the 3 big rookies from this year, did not come from the draft, if memory serves. That would add to my point, no?

I agreed most teams do...all i am saying is its hard to only build through the draft when your most important player is mediocre

you wont get anywhere that way

There arent always franchise Qbs in the draft, obviously

I agree, but my point is you're not going to get very far through spending money in FA until you draft a franchise QB. You might get lucky like the Broncos did, but that's just another 3 year all-in.

Yeah, but now that teams have to spend, its out of their hands

I havent completely lost hope with Weeden. He was in an offense that didnt fit him even a little bit
