I told my girlfriend at the beginning of our relationship that I find most material items to be a massive waste of money and I will not purchase them. It took a little while, but she eventually took on my philosophy and doesn't care about most of that crap anymore.
She hasn't carried around a purse since the first year we dated, and she is also the reason we have a wii u and play smash bros several times a week.
