I never played soccer as a kid. Even in recess it was the most boring shit in the world to me. He told me he didn't want to play it a couple weeks ago because he overheard me telling my wife in fucking hate soccer. So I explained to him it's the most boring sport to watch but I am more than willing to help him get better at it. He wants to play soccer football and I think wrestle. I'll take 2 out of 3 .
On the video game subject, if that's what he wants I will support that shit. There is money in it now. A lot of it. And it's only going to get bigger. When I was a kid that was always the argument that it was worthless since there is no money. Between pro gaming and youtube channels. But I can also see why you wouldn't want that since it's a big addiction to break if you don't make it.
I'm going to look into smite for the One. Been looking for a time waster for a couple hours a week type of game.
Soccer, football or tennis I'd be pretty pumped for. I was decent at all of those, but obviously put the most time/effort into soccer. Football is worrying with the whole concussion issue, but I think practices will continue getting safer and safer. I've never broken a bone playing a sport (broke a few knuckles in fights and punching a tree when I was drunk, but that's it), so I'm not too worried about him getting hurt, but I think his mom would probably be a bit more apprehensive of him playing a full contact sport.
The gaming industry is just rough to actually make it as a pro. Regardless of how talented you are, there's always a bit of luck involved. It's not easy to find a full team of people on or above your level, that was always a huge problem for me in Halo and was one of the reasons I mostly just played ranked games or dubs on GB. I can't blame him if he wants to game, I just want to make sure he's doing other shit as well and not spending 100% of his free-time stuck there from an early age. At least develop some social skills and game with IRL buddies for awhile and then with randoms or w/e. It does suck that the split-screen era is just fucking dead, I had some of my nights as a teen just going hard with 3-6 friends rotating on Halo2/3 split-screen or lanning up computers and doing D2 runs with mods and playing fucking Starcraft.
Check it out for sure. I don't have my One anymore (hopefully buying another one in the next month or two), but I played on there and it was a lot of fun.
