Houston Texans Sign Terrell McClainThe Houston Texans have signed defensive tackle Terrell McClain, who was released earlier this month by the Patriots. The USF product and 2011 third-round pick by Carolina has potential as an interior pass rusher in sub-packages, but he is undersized and struggled against the run last season. I don’t see that changing any time soon, but he can be a quality player in this league if he develops enough as a pass rusher. He has upside there, and that upside can be tapped by Wade Phillips and the Houston Texans.
I actually like McClain’s prospects in a 3-4 at DE a lot more than as a 4-3 DT, but that’s only because he has more upside there. It’s a nice low-risk move for the Texans, as they could potentially morph him into an above-average pass rushing specialist.
Carolina PanthersHe was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft. On September 2, 2012, he was released.
New England PatriotsMcClain signed with the New England Patriots on September 26, 2012. On October 2, 2012, he was waived.
Houston TexansMcClain signed with the Houston Texans on October 29, 2012.
I sure hope this kid sticks around with the Texans. His NFL career is looking like a bust so far, but he's still young and if anybody can turn him into a beast like he was in college it's going to be Wade Phillips. Just look at what he's done for Kareem Jackson in the pros (complete transformation) and he was also a player who struggled mightily as a rookie just like McClain did. Also there is a lot of talk around the NFL that Terrell McClain will be better suited in the Texans 3-4 defense because they get the most out of their edge rushers. This could be a huge steal and home run signing by Texans GM Rick Smith if he pans out. This is like a free third-round pick in last year's draft. There is very little to lose and a lot to gain with this signing.
