I had three wisdom teeth (two on bottom jaw, one on top). Generally the bottom ones are more troublesome (dry sockets), but honestly I didn't have any pain or discomfort before or after surgery. They removed them because they would have been a problem if they had grown in fully, but TBH it was the best thing that ever happened to me.

They get you loaded on Propofol and Fentanyl at the office, then send you on your way with a loaded Vicodin script for the next couple of weeks. I got fuckin' LOADED on painkillers while I was on probation, and there wasn't shit they could do about it.

Regardless of the PK's, I had it easy. My wisdom teeth caused me no pain before surgery, and none after.

Getting wisdom teeth out is so expensive though and I don't have dental insurance.

A girl from my highschool died from getting her wisdom teeth out because she was apparently allergic to oxy or some shit she was given.

Don't you love how in the richest country in the world healthcare isn't a right?

Seriously though, that sucks and I'm sorry. I had dental through my mom at the time so I didn't pay anything. That's a fuckin' bitch man.

I doubt she died from being "allergic" to Oxy; more likely she had a reaction to whatever anesthetic they used before removing her wisdom teeth.

I think you're both missing out on how much a backbone injury could be milked for narcotics.

yeah that was it, it was long time ago but apparently she wasn't getting enough oxygen in her brain which led to her death.

The main side effect of Opioid painkillers is that they depress your respiratory system, leading to a lack of oxygen to vital organs. In a clinical setting, this should never result in death, so I'm sorry your friend ended up like that.

Heroin doesn't damage your body at all; that is until it randomly stops your lungs from functioning. That's why Opiates are so dangerous.

EDIT: What I mean by that is anybody receiving painkillers in a medical setting should be monitored for respiratory function. If the painkillers acted as such a drastic "downer" as to stop her from respirating, she should have been artificially respirated. Medicated depression is a very treatable side effect. IDK any of the details of that situation, but I would look into malpractice if that was the cause of death.

And while I'm giving out wildly inappropriate medical advice: this is why Ketamine is used in emergency situations. Opiate painkillers are highly effective, but have a high risk of life threatening side effects (respiratory depression). It's also useful in patients who have a high opioid tolerance (heroin junkies), and people on Naltrexone. Naltrexone is a drug that blocks the opioid receptors in the brain from being accessed. I've been on Naltrexone for years, so I could bang Dilaudid all day and not feel a thing. Ketamine (and DXM, and PCP) work through an entirely different path in your brain. While Opiates block pain receptors from being accessed, dissociatives block all of your senses (to some extent), so you don't feel painful stimuli at all. It's a very important distinction, for people who have been reliant on Opioids for a long period of time (again, Heroin junkies), or people on Naltrexone (alcoholics).
