Having spent the past four seasons with the Jets, Pettine says Friday in his introductory press conference that the talent level in Buffalo was one factor in his decision to switch teams two weeks ago.
''There are some good football players here and we are excited to work with them,'' he said. ''They are explosive athletes and playmakers and we are looking forward to building a system that is going to take advantage of that.''

''We're going to play smart, we're going to be tough, we're going to be relentless,'' he said. ''We're going to put pressure on you. We're going to force quarterbacks, we're going to force offenses to make very quick decisions. We're going to take our best shot at you. We're not going to be a read-and-react defense. That is not in our vocabulary.''

Marrone has ''always been an admirer'' of Pettine's and that he boarded a flight to meet with him immediately after being introduced in Buffalo Jan. 21.

I know Ryan is a great defensive coach, but Pettine did a lot of the play-calling, and a lot of the schematic masterminding. I have a great feeling about what he can do for the Bills. The defense is going to be so intense. He'll get the most out of Williams, Darnett, Merriman, etc. Haven't been excited about the team's defense like this in a long time.

The team has a TON of potential this year, depending on FA acquisitions I think they can win the AFC East if all the pieces fall into place or fail in a spectacular and hilarious fashion if they don't (and probably clean house with HC/DC/OC again LOL)

Slated to reach free agency after failing to attempt a single pass last season, Jackson was re-signed Friday. While that transaction is hardly earth-shattering news, head coach Doug Marrone's accompanying quotes certainly registered on the Richter scale.

"I spoke with Ryan (Fitzpatrick) and Tarvaris (Jackson) and told them we will have an open competition at the quarterback position," Marrone said, "similar to what we will do at all positions on our team heading into our offseason work."

Having already received $21 million of the six-year, $62 million contract signed during the 2011 season, Fitzpatrick is due a $3 million roster bonus in March. It will actually cost the Bills more money against the cap to retain Fitzpatrick than to release him.
