It's should force engagements. Aggressive teams will get a pick and force teams that just want to sit in a corner and teamshot to pick up the pace.

I like the calculated nature of competitive game modes as opposed to the bush league shit that is quickplay.

In survival if a team wants to hide in a corner, the other team will realize this, surround them, throw grenades and supers at them and get a triple kill as they run around like chickens.

This will force a faster more quickplay-esque style of play.

is the expansion pass necessary - is it actual content or is it just bonus colors and stuff

It's the DLCs. It will be necessary if you intend to play the game past December.

Every time a DLC is released, if you don't have it you'll be at irrelevant levels and locked out of existing content as well as not having access to new content.

You can always just buy these as they come out, for $20 a pop, if you're not sure how much you plan on playing. I never get passes for games, since I never end up wanting to play all the expansions in games. Just depends on the person.
