The first team to overhaul their uniforms with a Nike edge was the Seattle Seahawks in 2012. It appears the Jacksonville Jaguars will be next. The Jaguars will introduce a new logo on Tuesday at 4 p.m., according to Uni Watch. The new uniforms will be unveiled in mid-April and will feature “a Nike edge with a lot more gold,” according to Pete Prisco of CBS Sports. Prisco also tweeted that there would be “little teal” in the new jerseys. The Jaguars had just redesigned their uniforms in 2009, but that was done by Reebok. The 2009 overhaul eliminated much of the gold in the uniform, and added black and white piping down the sides of the jerseys. There’s no word on whether the Jaguar helmet logo will keep the teal tongue.

Busy signal changed history for Jaguars, Ravens
Future star went to Ravens, and Jaguars got QB Byron Leftwich

By Ryan O'Halloran

NEW ORLEANS — The careers of Byron Leftwich and Terrell Suggs and the fortunes of the Jaguars and Baltimore Ravens could be far different if it weren’t for a busy phone line on April 26, 2003.

Leftwich would have been selected by Baltimore with the seventh overall pick. Suggs could have ended up with Minnesota at No. 10 or slid to his hometown Arizona Cardinals.

Baltimore and Minnesota completed a trade that would have allowed the Ravens to pick Leftwich with the seventh pick.

“I remember having phone talks with [Ravens general manager] Ozzie [Newsome] and it was pretty much set in stone,” Leftwich said earlier this season. “I thought I would be a Raven, but it didn’t happen that way.”

Problem was, before the 15-minute time allotment passed, the Vikings couldn’t reach the NFL to record the transaction.

With Radio City Music Hall buzzing, the Vikings lost their slot.

Jaguars video director Mike Perkins, who is still with the organization, raced a card up to draft Leftwich with the seventh pick.

“We’ve solved our quarterback position for the next 10 years,” Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver said that day.

Carolina quickly followed with left tackle Jordan Gross. The Vikings re-grouped, kept their “new” pick — No. 9 overall — and selected defensive tackle Kevin Williams.

Suggs went No. 10 to the Ravens.

It didn’t work out for the Jaguars long-term. Ranking the four picks in order of career impact:

1. Williams. A five-time All-Pro, he has 56.5 sacks and 316 tackles in 156 games.

2. Suggs. Although limited by two injuries this year, he has 84.5 sacks and 25 forced fumbles in 149 games. He was the 2011 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

3. Gross. Has started all of his 151 career games.

4. Leftwich. Had a 24-20 starting record (51 touchdowns, 36 interceptions) for Jaguars and has been with Pittsburgh, Atlanta and Tampa Bay since.

Only Leftwich isn’t still with his original team and hasn’t been named to at least one All-Pro team.

Suggs has a chance to become the first of the linked quartet to win a Super Bowl when Baltimore faces San Francisco on Sunday night in the Superdome.

“It’s been a long journey,” Suggs said this week. “It’s been a long 10 years, but I’ve been fortunate to have some success. It’s all been priceless and I’m really appreciating this.”

The self-appreciation level increased this year. Suggs tore his Achilles’ tendon last spring in Arizona but showed enough progress before the regular season that the Ravens did not put him on the season-ending injured reserve list.

Suggs missed the first six games but then tore a biceps tendon, forcing him to miss two more games. He had career-lows in games (eight) and sacks (two).

In the playoffs, though, Suggs has 19 tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble in three games.

“He’s getting closer and closer to the old Suggs,” Ravens defensive coordinator Dean Pees said.

Said Suggs: “It’s definitely been an uncharacteristic season. I’m a guy that doesn’t normally get hurt and had two injuries that were supposed to sideline me for the year. But I just refused to accept it. What drove me to work so hard was the possibility of being here. I knew we had a team that was on the brink and I wanted to be a part of it.”

Although Suggs pushed back Broncos left tackle Ryan Clady a few times in the teams’ divisional playoff game, he admits the two injuries have impacted his production.

“I don’t know if I’m even close to normal right now,” Suggs said.

Newsome didn’t do everything right that day in 2003. He traded a second-round pick (eventually safety Eugene Wilson) and a 2004 first-round pick (eventually Vince Wilfork) to New England to move back into the first round and take quarterback Kyle Boller. He was 20-22 as a starter before the Ravens moved on to Steve McNair and eventually current starter Joe Flacco.

Mathis is a FA and I highly doubt he'll be back. Ross should get cut because he's flat out garbage. We're going to be hurting at CB, even worse then we are now. Middleton is a FA and so is Cox. CB will HAVE to be a must in this draft, and early at that.

That's where I've seen the value at this whole time and nothing has changed my mind yet. Somebody's going to fall to us at that pick.
