“When I got here I met with [tight ends] coach [Mike] Pope and once we started talking, we hit it off,” the newly-signed tight end said. “It was kind of like love at first sight.”

GIANTS' TE MARTELUS BENNETT ANXIOUS TO SHOW WHAT HE HAS TO OFFER

"It didn’t take long for the Giants to steal Martellus Bennett’s heart when he visited the team yesterday during what became a brief free-agent tour.

“When I got here I met with [tight ends] coach [Mike] Pope and once we started talking, we hit it off,” the newly-signed tight end said. “It was kind of like love at first sight.”

Justin Tuck and a few other players aided in the Giants' courting throughout the day, and, just like that, Bennett and the team made a commitment -- a short one, but a commitment nonetheless.

Today, the two sides agreed on a one-year deal reportedly worth $2.5 million three days into free agency.

For the Giants, the one-year deal gives them the low-risk, high-reward, “prove it to us" route they seek, as they did with cornerback Terrell Thomas yesterday. The Giants were forced into the tight end free-agent market after both Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum tore their ACLs during the Super Bowl, leaving their statuses for next year in question.

For the 25-year-old Bennett, now a former Cowboy, the commitment provides him the opportunity to showcase his talents after being behind Pro Bowler Jason Witten on the depth chart in Dallas for four seasons.

“He is anxious to prove the quality of athlete and football player that he can be,” coach Tom Coughlin said. “If you go back to ’08, '09, '10, '11, you can see spots where he flashes as what he could be.”

The 6-foot-6, 265-pound Bennett is an athletic pass-catcher who follows the narrative of some of the league’s premier tight ends. Like Jimmy Graham, Antonio Gates and others, Bennett also played college basketball while at Texas A&M before choosing football full-time.

But during his time as a Cowboy, he served as Witten's backup and only started 32 games in four years. His most productive season came as a rookie when he caught 20 passes for 283 yards and four touchdowns in 16 games (seven starts) in 2008. He has not caught a touchdown since.

For his career, he has played 60 games in four seasons -- starting 32 of them -- with 85 receptions for 846 yards.

Ballard and Beckum or not, Bennett hopes to emerge as the every-down tight end next season and beyond for the first time in his career.

“I think you got to see a glimpse, but I was in a limited role,” Bennett said of his time in Dallas. “I think in a larger role I can do so much more. I think the sky’s the limit. I don’t think anyone’s really seen who I am as a player and what I have to offer.

“I don’t want to say I have a lot to prove, but I have a long to-do list so I have a lot of things I need to do as a football player so I think this is a place where I have the opportunity to do everything I want to do.”

MARTELLUS BENNETT FREE-AGENT SIGNING: COUGHLIN CALLS MOVE "PERFECT MATCH"

"New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin today called the signing of free-agent tight end Martellus Bennett a "perfect match." The Giants signed the four-year veteran to a one-year, $2.5 million contract.

"In our situation it's a perfect match, because here we are with two guys that aren't going to be able to go," Coach Tom Coughlin said. "We get a guy with this quality and we can say to him, ‘You go out on the field, you go from less than 30 percent play time to 70-75-80 percent play time just by virtue of if you come here and if you are willing to pay the price to be what you want to be. Here's the opportunity.'"

Star-divide

Bennett, 6-foot-6, 265 pounds, played his first four season with the Dallas Cowboys as the backup to Jason Witten. The one-year deal is a sort of "prove it" contract for Bennett, who gets an opportunity to be the Giants' primary tight end in 2012 with both Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum rehabbing from torn ACLs suffered during the Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots.

"We had a very good, open, forthright visit with Martellus today, and we are excited to have him join the Giants family," general manager Jerry Reese said. "He's ready to go to work and wants to prove he can be one of the top tight ends in the NFL; we think the sky is the limit for him here."

Watching the Super Bowl, Bennett saw Ballard and Beckum go down and thought he might end up in New York with the Giants.

"I'm just happy to be able to come here and get a chance to be the starter and work with a guy like Eli (Manning) and with guys around me like Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks," Bennett said. "In Dallas it was the same thing with Dez (Bryant), but I think it's different for me now because I get the chance to step up and really show what I can do."

The Giants seem intrigued by the untapped potential they see in Bennett, who caught 85 passes in four seasons with the Cowboys. As a backup to Jason Witten in Dallas, Bennett's first job was to block and he wa rarely a focal point in the Dallas passing attack.

"What you have is a talented athlete who played behind an all-pro," Coughlin said. "Who is not very satisfied, is not very fulfilled, is anxious. He is anxious to prove the quality of athlete and football player that he can be. If you go back to '08, '09, '10, '11, you can see spots where he flashes as what he could be.

"He feels like he hasn't scratched the surface of what he can do. And he's a young, aspiring, athletic tight end who can run. He'll be up the seams at 6-6, 265. He can run up the seams with speed and be up over the top of a lot of people. So we're excited about that. He's got a ways to go, but he'll work at it. This could be a terrific move for both him and us."

Bennett was a second-round draft choice by Dallas from Texas A&M in 2008, the 61st overall selection."

NEW YORK GIANTS: THE RETURN OF CHAD JONES

"Drafted in the 3rdround (#76) in the 2010 NFL Draft, Chad Jones was once considered a steal for the New York Giants. However; since his accident many fans have forgotten about the Safety out of LSU. Fortunately, the Giants haven't forgotten as they have reconstructed the remaining two years of Jones' contract; which indicates that they feel Jones can still be a productive player on the team. Here's a look at his pre-draft scouting report:

“Jones was called the best athlete on the team by many of his LSU Tiger teammates and it would be hard to argue such an assessment. Jones has been blessed with natural athletic talent, standing at an imposing 6'3' and 230 pounds. He can run under 4.5 in the 40-yard dash, has great hands, and--not surprisingly--was one of the hardest hitters in Baton Rouge. Jones started to put all of those tools together on the football field as a junior in 2009. Playing on an LSU defense that has always been loaded, Jones did not start as a freshman (although he contributed significantly) and he started six games as a sophomore. Emerging as a potent defensive force in 2009, Jones finished fifth on the team with 74 total tackles and tied for fourth with 37 assists. He led the squad with three interceptions and he recorded both a blocked kick and a forced fumble. Jones also returned a punt for a 93-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter of a 30-26 victory over Mississippi State. Jones never put up star quality numbers in college, in part because he lacked a ton of experience and decided to enter the NFL Draft following his junior season. Had he decided to return for his senior campaign, Jones could have found himself in the first round of the 2011 draft.”

Unfortunately in June of 2010, Jones was involved in a horrible car accident that nearly cost him his life. He's been recovering ever since and it’s been a long road, but Jones has made some tremendous strides in recent months. Jonesis at 80% and barring any unforeseen setbacks, Jones should be ready to re-join the Giants when training camp begins. However, a spot on the team is not a certainty and he'll have to earn his way on, with Antrel Rolle, Kenny Phillips and Tyler Sash all guaranteed spots, Jones' competition will come from any free agents/rookies the Giants add to the roster.

Other Footnotes: The Giants GM Jerry Reese addressed a pressing need this week by re-signing 3 of his own players who had their 2011 seasons cut short by injuries: Corner-Back’s Terrell Thomas, Michael Coe and Justin Tryon. This will give the Giants the needed depth – along with the draft – for training camp.

Here is a list of players the Giants have either retained or brought under contract since Super Bowl XLVI:

03/13/2012 Joel Reinders (OL) – signed to new contract

03/13/2012 Larry Donnell (TE) – signed to new contract

03/13/2012 Michael Coe (CB) – signed to new contract

03/13/2012 Justin Tryon (CB) – signed to new contract

03/13/2012 Terrell Thomas (CB) – signed to new contract

03/05/2012 Steve Weatherford (P) – designated Franchise Tag

03/02/2012 Domenik Hixon (WR) – signed to new contract 02/14/2012

Chris White (C) – signed as free agent

02/14/2012 Ryan Purvis (TE) – signed as free agent

02/14/2012 Craig Marshall (DE) – signed as free agent

What makes GM Reese so successful are the little moves he makes. Reese finds players that fit into the Giants system and if he selects enough, a few should develop into solid players to contribute to the success of the team."
