When players come and go, yet nothing ever changes, it definitely spells out that there's a bigger issue than just the players.
Are they trying to force players into that Def scheme, rather then building the scheme around the players? Are the players they're acquiring just flat out not good? Is the scheme just flat out not any good?
The only good thing about the "system" we have in place is that the limited variables let us see what's truly wrong because the core defense has been together for 3 seasons now. Players are being drafted for the scheme and it's just fucking awful. Datone Jones, Nick Perry, Randall and Rollins were all drafted because they fit the archetype of each position Capers was looking for. Randall and Rollins were multi-sport athletes that had more innings of baseball played between them than quarters of football. Natural athletes with no known character flaws that were grabbed early on. Perry and Datone were forced into the scheme when it was clear that neither were really comfortable in the role. Shit, Perry didn't even make a real impact until his contract year last season.
The players might have been talented and warranted the draft pick they got at one point, but this system and current roster isn't getting what they could from the young guys, and that's on the staff. That's the scheme, the coordinators and the scouts who help create the big board.
Time for change, Eric.
