Overall grade: C
Biggest plus: We got a possible successor for Ben, replacement for Bryant, and a few safeties with potential to contribute early.
Biggest negative: In my eyes, we failed to get a backup plan for Lev Bell, who we’d be INSANE to pay what he is asking. He SHOULD be as good as gone next season, and may not even show up until 10 weeks in this year. We also failed to address the position in FA. I also think we failed to get high value for our picks.
Round 1, Pick 28, (No. 28 overall):Terrell Edmunds, S, Virginia tech
I’m not a fan of the pick this early. He likely would have been there in rd 2 or 3, but the Steelers did what they usually do and got their guy regardless of where he was “supposed” to go. The only way I see this pick making a lot of sense is if they put him in the box and use him in a way similar to Mark Barron/Deone Buchanon as a coverage linebacker.
Round 2, Pick 28 (No. 60 overall): James Washington, WR, Oklahoma State
I thought this was a solid pick here. I was torn between Washington and Chark as the best rec available. Washington obviously was more productive in college. As a deep threat, his size and speed combo is strange. I think he’ll be a solid slot guy though.
Round 3, Pick 12 (No. 76 overall) [via Seattle]:Mason Rudolph, QB, Oklahoma State
Love this pick here. There was talk about us maybe taking him at the end of round 1, which would have been ridiculous…to get him in round 3 is a solid pick though. I don’t see him ever being a top tier franchise QB, but he could be a solid starter in the NFL with time. At the least, he could be a transitional guy when Ben retires. At best, he’ll step in and I see his ceiling as Kirk Cousins
Round 3, Pick 28 (No. 92 overall):Chuks Okorafor, OT, Western Michigan
We need depth on the OL. That was a big problem for us a few years back. In the past couple of seasons we have been fortunate to have solid line play and healthy line play. I don’t know much about him in particular compared to other linemen available at this point, but the positional pick makes sense.
Round 5, Pick 11 (No. 148 overall): Marcus Allen, S, Penn State
I think this is another S with potential to slide into the box. He’s big and physical for a safety. This draft really makes me think the Steelers have lost all faith in Sean Davis. I see him on his way out.
Round 5, Pick 28 (No. 165 overall): Jaylen Samuels, RB, North Carolina State
Samuels is a versatile player that could take carries, block, and catch out of the backfield. The pick is strange though considering we have Nix at FB already. I see Samuels as more of a FB than a RB.
Round 7, Pick 28 (No. 246 overall): Joshua Frazier, DL, Alabama
We need depth on the DL, but I don’t know how much production we’ll get out of him.
