As not just a Cardinals fan but an Arizona sports fan, I've learned to not get my hopes up and stay pretty level headed about the situation. Suns for all those years, so close could never do it. Cardinals in the SB. DBacks a few years lately, Coyotes too just not quite good enough. Prepare for the worst possible outcome, enjoy every second of success. Idk if that's a poor outlook on it but it helps make it a lot easier if the worst does happen.
i think that's what you come to expect after years of relative success. Badger football and basketball, Brewer baseball and the Packers are all examples of successful teams that come quite close to the ultimate goal (not so much for the Brewers/Badger Football) but fall short. to me, it's just a realistic paradigm; you expect a certain level of success and are excited as can be, but you also are aware of your teams shortcomings and are prepared for the outcome when a superior opponent presents themselves
