The Chicago Bears are releasing kicker Cody Parkey, a league source confirmed to ESPN on Friday.

Parkey missed three extra point attempts and eight field goal tries -- including a 43-yarder that would have beaten the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round of the playoffs -- in his first season with the Bears.

Getting the NFL's five biggest spenders out of salary-cap hell
The Eagles are currently more than $22 million over the salary cap. How can they, and four other teams, save money?

The "double-doink" kick, after being slightly tipped, bounced off the left upright and hit the crossbar against Philly. Bears coach Matt Nagy then expressed disapproval with Parkey's decision to appear as a guest on "The Today Show" five days after missing on that attempt.

Parkey also bounced four kicks off the uprights during a Week 10 victory over the Detroit Lions, which helped give him the third-lowest field goal conversion rate in the NFL.

The Bears signed Parkey, 27, to a four-year deal that included $9 million in guaranteed money last March. The team will have to carry $4,437,500 worth of dead salary-cap money once Parkey is cut when the new league year begins.

do you know what fully guaranteed means?
you even state he did not get cut purely for football reasons, not sure how you think this reflects poorly on me.

So i admit, at first I was not thinking moneywise, which is what you meant. However, you were definitely set on him being around this coming year. I agree that stunt with today show was dumb as fuck, but I think he did that to try and save as much face as possible because he already knew he was on the chopping block.
Either way, we are on to bigger and better things rust.

Literally every kicker hits the crossbar. This isnt the end of parkey. Only a free agent nfl kicker like gould/lambo would mean parkey isnt in camp

haha, yes. Like I said, I definitely read that quote as he was guaranteed to play next year until midway through setting up my post but at that point I was too lazy to fix, haha.

he counts 4 mil against the cap next year, then 562k dead cap the next 2 years. gonna be interesting to see if we can keep callahan and amos with our cap. I could see us cutting long to have the money to sign both.

damn you think so? long is a good player, but maybe slightly injury prone, 4 mil can't be a lot of cap money (is it?) I mean for a kicker it is, but not overall, right?

its above average for a kicker and now we have to pay someone else.
