Why do they have one?

There are enough pro level hockey players around the world, seems senseless not to have the new team just recruit from outside the NHL

Billionaires paying expansion costs aren’t shelling out cash for a bad team. Especially after Vegas.

so other teams that were forced to draft develop trade sign players are forced to give one up so they dont have to do any of that and achieve a good team?

idk i dont see another way to do it but expansion drafts are kinda lame
like take philly for example if we trade for a d man to not be a shit team this season we have to expose somebody like nolan patrick

i think you should be able to protect more players if you are a good team with depth your forced to expose solid players for nothing and then have to try and replace that lost player to keep contending

its a broken system that penalizes the better teams in the league while a shit team can expose some shitter they didnt even want anyways


it doesnt seem very fair but how else would u do it? just give them a couple days early in free agency or something to snag players before other teams?
its just crazy u can draft 30 players from 30 teams and be a top team in the league... thats not how an expansion team should be but its how it is cause of the shitty protection system in place forcing teams to expose good talent

Not the point, they shouldn’t be rewarded. They should simply get a lottery pick and then that’s it. Maybe an early phase to talk to free agents before other teams

Yeah it ain’t fair. But after Vegas went to the final in their first year, no potential expansion owner would ever settle for less than the rules they got. It’s too generous, but Bettman wants that cold hard cash above all.

So? Why does it matter what other leagues do, there is vast pool of talent outside the NHL, I’m sure if this is the case with other leagues.

Disagree, NHL talent is already way too watered down with this many teams. So many bad players with roster spots. Need fewer teams.

it also helps NHLPA get their players on the teams prior to free agents
