Man first they compete on the ice, now they seem to be competing off ice as well.

Yzerman turned tampa Bay franchise around and recently won the cup.
The team wasn't great by any means prior to him joining the org. He set up a solid foundation and within half a decade, they became competitive, eventually winning the cup.

Sakic also turned his team around rather quickly. It was very ballsy of him to sacrifice short term performance of his team for the bigger picture and it paid off. While everyone thought he was trash for letting duchene go, and go all in with mack + insane contract, he shut everyone up. His team is set up for success, the only competitive team that hasn't suffered from the flat cap. Recently got Toews to beef up the already stacked backend. Also still drafting well (newhook + byram)

Not a fair comparison right now

Yzerman already built a team that accomplished being top of the league for years and winning a cup - we have seen the full results

Sakics job can't be evaluated as much yet as we haven't seen the full results yet with Colorado

Sakic >

Ofc my homer is real but let's be honest, Yzerman left tampa in a shitty place handing out 9 NTC/NMC clauses to players lol. He got em a cup tho so I guess it was worth it

I think it's still pretty fair.

It took Yzerman 8 years for his team to win the cup. He also wasn't responsible for picking stammer and Hedman, although it's a given pick. He's credit goes to drafting well in the later rounds (point, kucherov etc.) going all in with NTC contracts to ensure a cup, kinda like what Gillis did but Canucks choked instead.

Sakic hasn't been on the job as long but I think he gets more credit than Yzerman at the moment. Mostly because he was heavily shit on in his early tenure as GM. I suspect some of the moves were clashing with Roy, ever since he departed sakic has been hitting home runs with his decision making. He got great returns for Duchene which at the time most ppl thought he was derping. He created an insane backend with Cole being like ur depth dman lol. With Timmons byram etc. Coming up.

He really just needs a healthy starter goaltender imo, and he got plenty of cap space to tweak and improve his team even more.

Yzerman has already built a powerhouse that's won a Cup.

Until Sakic does the same there is no discussion here.

Sakic is no doubt a great gm, but until the team he builds wins a cup i wouldnt even consider it a fair match up.
And lets not forget Yzerman had a role in helping the wings to two finals and another cup win in 08 as vice president. And also winning gold and two silvers in his 4 years working with Team Canada from 2007-2010

what if he does soon, who do you think is the better GM??

I mean, if i made this post like 6months ago when the season was at pause, you'd be going off with Tampa making damn crazy reg season record history only to be swept by the jackets.
both teams have comparable record this season 43-21-6 vs 42-20-8.
They both lost crucial players in the run this season, with Stammer out and Avs playing a 3rd string goalie, but still making it further than loleafs and such
We can still discuss their work as GM, i personally think sakic has had way more balls and some sort of black magic insight. I mean fans were literally comparing him to Benning as worst GM in the league lolol

that's a good point, Yzerman had longer prior experience before officially becoming a GM for tampa. He also rejected lolwild to be their GM as well., so he had a choice where he wanted to do his magic.

While Sakic is just a straight up badass, as he knew he's a colorado 4lyfe gangsta. The biggest difference btwn them is that sakic is willing to walk away from good players, whether they be franchise or core players. if he doesnt feel right about it, hes gonna find a way to get returns to further imrpove his team and stack it more, being peer pressured by the media/fans doesn't seem faze him at all. Giving up players like barrie or duchene isn't an easy task, i think 30 other GM's including yzerman would have tried their best to retain them at cap friendly contract or something. Seattle expansion draft is around the corner, his team will definitely lose someone good, but holy shit just the prospects ready to replace them is not bad either.

just seems like sakic also has some sorcery going on, anyone he brings into the team seems to have one of their best career years lol. He quickly patches and fixes problems, oh my team is a 1 line team like the leafs? np! kadri get ur ass over here, done. Remember Valeri? the dude that seemed like a bust and was headed back home to KHL or some shit? his nhl career got saved by sakic magic. Like shit man, take loui eriksson and he would become a 30g scorer again instead of a meme emptynet specialist god

no doubt, but the poll wasnt who WILL be the better GM, it's who IS the better GM, and up to this point, its been yzerman.
