TLDR:

Parise, Weber, Suter Contracts will no longer be cap hits in the tens of millions if they retire early.

If those situations did occur under the old rules a $20 + million cap hit would unquestionably destroy a team.

However they are now removed from a large percentage of self inflicted liability which I don't feel is fair at all.

You should have to live with the contracts you sign. Full figures in the link.

The Canucks get no relief on the Luongo contract because it does not meet a minimum threshold.

I really call bullshit in regards to these sanctions being reduced. It was cap circumvention. Why partially forgive some teams who circumvented the cap while giving other teams nothing?

Really embarrassing look for the league imo.

Not sure of the legalities but I feel the Canucks should file a grievance; although they probably have nothing to stand on if the new CBA is ratified.

Gross...

Giving teams that break now is really lame because they clearly used methods of circumventing the cap and wont have any repercussions like others teams have had.
We had to trade off Datsyuks cap hit moving back in the draft 4 spots just to get rid of it. (And we didnt even circumvent the cap, just signed an older player to a fair contract who decided to go back to his home country before his contract was up)
We couldve picked from Chychrun, Fabbro, or Bellows but instead settled after those 3 were taken on Cholowski who has been really underwhelming.
Yes we got Hronek with the 53rd pick we got back from them, which is a big win for us, but the point is that we had to pay a price, either stick with cap hit or move back, but other teams just get to skate free.
This along with the stupid lottery shit is starting to paint a really ugly picture for the league, and it's only going to get worse if an edmonton, toronto, pittsburgh etc end up with that 1st overall pick.

I agree.

That is a good example. Detroit played by the rules and there was consequences in full for the contract they signed. The contract they signed was closer to the reasonable side too as you said. Datsyuk had some back problems and wanted to play in his homeland. Nothing egregious about that.

The league basically took it easy on teams they knew would get absolutely smacked upside the head because it is obvious those players will (in all likelihood) retire before the contracts expire.

The fact the league saved them because they knew a hit that hard would turn a team upside down is a joke. If they put these rules in play to begin with they should be enforcing them at all full force - Instead they pick and choose who gets a break and who does not.

On the flip side the Canucks get no break because they see the cap punishment as manageable. Well I am sure most know it is not manageable... The recapture penalty combined with bonehead contracts given to dinosaurs is going to make it almost impossible to keep together a promising young core.

Total bush league trash tier league management. Hypocrisy is their middle name.

Joke ass league lmao

First, this joke league gets 200iq outsmarted by Gillis and Gilman, approving luongo's contract.

Second, preds and other teams copy and abuse the contract format, and league decides to create the penalty.

Third, they included the Canucks to the penalty AFTER initially approving it

Fourth, they punish the Canucks because lu actually fulfilled most of his contract and was decent throughout until the last 2 yrs left. Florida pressures lu to retire, and he does.

Fifth, now they change it up for the other teams because it will punish them too hard  (wasn't that the fucking point?)
I mean they'll still be punished, but having 7.8cap for 3 years is a lot different than 24mil cap in a single year.

If anything the Canucks should have more leeway from the league, yet they're the most punished lmfao
