What can I do to get better at playing online? Everyone i'm playing online whether casual or competitive is kicking my ass. I play against my friend and I beat him consistently, so I didn't think I was terrible.

I played the training camp, should I grind online or play something solo against the AI? I beat the AI on pro every time, but if I move up to all-star difficulty I get my ass kicked. the computer on all-star mode makes such fast crisp passes and wins every face off. my last two games on all-star difficult I lost 2-5 and 1-7. I don't know how to get on that reaction speed level lol

I wish this game came to the Nintendo Switch! I'm stuck having to play NHL 99 (N64 version).

Defensive play is what wins.

Unfortunately you will have more luck adapting a very boring style to win.

Ea tried to limit the effectiveness of stick checks by making them cause penalties more often.

Players have responded by turning into stick checks and guessing when the opponent will use them.

Power plays seem to be easy to score on because the goalies appear to be programmed to have a higher percentage of letting in shots that come from a lateral pass. You won't win if you take penalties.

I always seem to get those games were I outshoot the opponent heavily and lose yet end up winning if I play poorly.

Online play is always going to be frustrating and feel cheaply done. That is the way it has been and I don't see it changing. If you want to win all I can suggest is learning how to play good defensively and keep yourself in position so you don't get deked out 1v1.

When you have the puck set up in the zone and just throw it around until the opponent makes a mistake. It is boring but if you start to do that I can bet you will win more than you lose. A lot of people just get impatient and don't enjoy the game when they don't have the puck so they will throw themselves at you to get it back.

/e also as sad as it is some people just never get it. The last game I played I beat someone who I thought was a new player. Turned out he played hundreds of games and was at ~ 35% win rate. Some will just never figure it out lol. Hope that is not you.

That is the last game I played.

Do you have any experience playing against the AI in any of the single player modes? Wonder if I can polish my defensive play there. I check the coach feedback after the games and my strong point is the defensive section. I usually get an A- or B+ in defense, B- on offense, and B- on team play

In the coaches feedback notes it says that I am timing my face offs well, but i'm losing the majority of them?

I like getting the puck around until I can get a shot off in the slot or a nice angled slap shot. I have pretty good aim with the left analog stick, this morning I whipped my friend 11-3 then got destroyed online. I quit down 0-4, as my opponent spin move deke'd around 3 of my defenders zoning around the goal and scored right in front of my goalie on the side he shot from

I hated playing online in NHL 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19.
I havent played 20 at all, but personally online doesnt feel like good hockey, it just feels like an online game because people exploit the games short comings, like poke checks and one timers.

If you want a more authentic (albeit still flawed) experience i would say just play vs the AI or a friend who wants to play the game like it should be played.

Personally i like Dynasty mode (or whatever its called now, gm mode i think) to build a team, draft, play through seasons etc. its the most fun way to play the game since you can still control your team in the games if you wish. Personally i would play on the two hardest difficulties, but i started out at the lowest difficulty and moved up once it was getting too easy, i think thats a good path to take, though some people like to jump right in to the harder difficulties and just learn from there. Its totally up to you.

Tldr: if you dont want a cheap exploit fest, id stick to playing with friends or the AI.

I suspected that the online versus was a cheap exploitation fest that I just wasn't privy on how to exploit. Thanks for clearing that up
