I agree that we all act in self interest, but we can align our interests to be less selfish.
For example, if you can learn to take joy from volunteering sure you are acting in your own self interest to make yourself feel righteous and responsible but it still has a positive result.
Killing a animal because it entertains you is self interested but helps no one.
We can still create a culture where positive things are made to feel rewarding and negative things work against our self interest.
I would agree with this. If this could be achieved, utility would be maximized.
Sadly this is not possible as everyone has a different reward system. The footholds to coerce individuals to fall in line closer to the majority is in place, but it will not be a strong enough deterrent for everyone.
The way society is set up now you are less likely to be successful (depending on what your definition of that is) if you were to abide by the all of the rules and prevailing beliefs/morals. For some the threat of social rejection, ridicule, financial penalization, or incarceration is not enough to prevent deviant behavior.
I think that is why those who are deviant from the norm are willing to step out from the majority thought process because of a perception that their self interests will be better serviced when weighed against the odds.
I appreciate your input. These type of conversations interest me and stress me out at the same time lol.
