How does it actually work?

If you take shorks v preds as an example and look at ek, hes got -3 according to nhl.com. But as far as im aware, hes on the ice for three goals against and 2 goals for. Shouldn't that put him at -1?

Or have i completely misunderstood the whole concept

Edit: wasnt aware that ppg didn't count towards +rating:)
