It's not strictly income based.

It's also His legal fees, His inability to enjoy life outside of hockey. A life time of pain that he has to deal with. Money that he could have invested with his income.

Ongoing medical costs, future surgeries ect.

1 mill is 20 years working at 50k, if the guy was young 1 mill was probably way less than the income he would have made and thats also legal fees and pain and suffering, seems pretty low compensation honestly for killing someone

As for this linesmen, google has linesmen salary at 115-220k depending on senority. Would take sometime to make 10m at those salaries, probably longer then he would have realistically worked, but that would have also been medical costs and pain and suffering etc. 2-5m would probably have been a fair ask if he is truly permanently out of work.
