I looked it up

Origin: The tradition started with a player killing a rat in the locker room and then scoring multiple goals.

"Rat Trick": The term "rat trick" was coined by a teammate after the player's two goals.

Fan participation: Fans began throwing plastic rats on the ice as a celebration.

NHL ban: The NHL eventually banned the tradition due to the delays it caused.
