The trade looks equal on it's face. Hard to say who got the better players and none of them are real impact players anyway. Gaborik's contract was more front loaded than Phaneufs, though. So even with the retained salary it looks like Melnyk will save some money so he'll complain a little less now - that's good
Both teams got a little bit of what they wanted, not really a winner on either side. LA will gain a defenseman who can play decent minutes and locker room presence, and Thompson is ok.
We saved a bit of money and unload Dion's contract which is good, got a little bit younger by bringing in Shore. We opened a spot on D and C for our prospects to have a chance to play into
Although he was slow, Dion was one of our few guys who wasn't soft as a teddy bear and he will be missed
