Nhl changed the eligibility for rookie. So unfortunately, players like panarin are still considered a rookie.
It is a joke though. And dirtyman, it's not age related. That's not the issue. It's the fact that he's played many pro games already, over 260 gamed played in khl.

And yea, as nhl states:

Rookie Qualifications
To be considered a rookie, a player must not have played in more than 25 NHL games in any preceding seasons, nor in six or more NHL games in each of any two preceding seasons. Any player at least 26 years of age (by September 15th of that season) is not considered a rookie.

Before, it did not say "in more than 25 nhl games" and simple said "in more than 25 pro games" which would make players who played in khl, like panarin or ahl or whl, like gretzky for numerous games ineligible

Again. Idgaf about the age when entering the league for a rookie. It's the fact he's been playing pro for years. Regardless if the nhl honors it or not.

He's an NHL rookie stop being an idiot. If you're 40 when you play your first NHL. Game you're still a rookie.

you stop being an idiot. It's more of this joke league with its joke rules and continuous inconsistencies. Wouldn't be surprised if they spinned the wheel to get answers for most of their solutions.
if a 40yr old player started his first pro league and dominated, ofc he deserves the calder, cos he's a rookie.
if a 40yr old player played 700+ games in other pro leagues and then dominated in NHL, he didn't earn shit competing with other REAL rookies.

Yes. But like Secksii said. This joke league allows him to do that without losing eligibility. Bet your ass if he wouldn't be considered rookie. He wouldn't be over there.

You do realize gretz led all rookies by 30 or more points and tied Marcel dionne for pts in his very first nhl season.
But cause he played wha before, nhl made this stupid rule to exclude players who had prior pro experiance in other leagues.
Then they all of a sudden change it to mean just nhl games. Hmmmm
