It's a social norm, not a fact of life. Again I'm a monogamous person but it just isn't realistic to say if you're in love with someone it's impossible to love someone else at the same time. Monogamy was introduced largely by religion, not by fact or human nature.
I think you can argue either way. It's normal for humans to look for multiple sexual partners, but it's also normal for us to want to "lock down" on the one we've already got. The whole mating rig gets tiring for a lot of people very quickly.
