It's 3.5m. Cap in 8 years will be well over 80m... it's gonna be like nothing. Again, it's on the assumption that he will be worth more than 3.5 partway through the deal, which given his world junior performance I would bet on.

That's an amazing deal for us if he stays healthy. Cowen is already an excellent shutdown defenceman. Exciting news, I hope he signs.

There are benefits for both parties in contracts like this though. He gets the security of knowing he will make 28 million in his next 8 years, more than most people will make in their lives. Then, at the end of the contract, he can re-up for what he's worth which may be like 8m.
With the understanding that the cap will be higher in the future, I would definitely want to re-sign later into my prime rather than sooner.
