Thornton did it, he couldn't control his emotions and admitted it. That's a shitty reason not to apologized, it could of lightened his punishment too


And @ your edit, that's fucked up, real fucked up. Not feeling bad about hurting a player, ESPECIALLY on a play like that would be gutless. It's not even like Marchand is a huge douchebag who has a history of injuring people. He's just a pest.
