I don't understand why that new team would terminate his contract instead of him just retiring? If it's a way to remove the cap-hit, why wouldn't the Wings just do it?

After some googling it looks like that's the kosher way to allow him to play in the KHL. Devils terminated Kovalchuk when he left too.

I think it also gets him around the 30 owners having to approve his return so they can sign him to a 1 day contract and have him retire a red wing without his being out of hockey for a year.

Holland had a really good interview. I think he gave some really good insight to the process and shared some stuff that we normally wouldnt hear. I'll try to link the media later.

Holland stated that he's looking to trade Howard. No surprise but interesting to hear him say it out loud.
Interesting stuff about Datsyuk and his agents relationship with him and the team then datsyuk firing him and not being represented for some time then acquiring an agent who was holland's friend.
More comments on how we could have lost him to the wrong counter and stuff about Datsyuk not necessarily understanding the rules about how this stuff would play out (now vs when he signed the deal) and affect the team. But also acknowledging that he of course really had the wings in his interest and did not want a negeative impact or connotation. It's fairly interesting. Not as black and white as a headline might make it seem.

He talked about how trading datsyuks contract for a one year cap relief might not make sense if the cost is too high (obviously). But as fans, we want it gone for this year cap. But if it comes at the cost of say a prospect and or 2nd/3rd round, thats a lot of future to give away for one year of relief for a team that cant really afford to give up the future. It's a tough spot.
He mentioned that if Datsyuk's contract isnt gone by July 7th ish, it most likely wont be moved because then it really wont make sense (FA market gone).

Flames are aggressively trying to move up to 3 or 4 overall. My guess is they're looking for a winger to play with Monahan and Gaudreau or to make the 2nd line more deadly.

Been mentioned here before but Puljujarvi seems like a perfect fit on that RW.

There were also rumors of CBJ possibly trading down to draft a center (someone like Logan Brown at #6) so that seems like a perfect fit.
