Dreger: Moving Datsyuk's contact will likely cost the Red Wings a 2nd and a player. Jurco or Pulkkinen has been suggested.

e/ If I'm a team that is trading for that contract I would demand their 1st or a much better asset along with that 2nd.

hes only got 1 year left
if i was the wings id try to retain 50% and likely get a much better deal
a team paying somebody 2.75m vs 5.5m is a big difference

but then again the devisl need like 9m if retained wont work as good

Lol no. 2nd and jurco/Pulkkinen is more than enough. A 1st would be ludicrous. The guys Florida got back aren't exactly career AHLers, they could both be depth players.

Wot

Thompson is the exact definition of a career AHLer and Black is closer to the ECHL than the NHL with his 10-15 points per season in the AHL.

They are absolutely nothing players, just contracts.

I personally wouldn't trade a 2nd for Jurco/Pulkkinen

If Savard's 4M cap + 575K salary is worth a 2nd rounder then how can't Datsyuk's 7M cap + 5.5M salary be worth a 1st?

If Datsyuk retires, his salary is $0, 35+ contracts only retain the cap hit, not the salary. A cap floor team still needs that cap hit, so to say double cap hit = double value is absolutely bonkers, it doesn't make sense for it to be a 1:1 ratio when $7M helps a cap floor team reach it more quickly in addition to helping the wings more than the panthers.

Jurco and Pulkkinen are roster players, one of them + a 2nd is more than enough. I'm also assuming you're equating two 2nds for a 1st with your comment about trading a 2nd for pulk/jurc, which is misguided in its own right since there have been more trades of 1st round for later 1st + 2nd than 1st for two 2nds lately.

Also keep in mind the 2nd from the savard trade is a 2018 pick, so it has less value than a 2016 or 2017 pick.

So yeah, a 1st is ludicrous.

Oh, I thought it was a 2016 2nd :D 2018 definitely has a lot less value. And I also forgot about the retirement salary. So you're right, that does help cancel out Datsyuk's negative value significantly.

As for the cap-hit, I don't think any team receiving the dump is going to consider more cap a good thing. It might help them out, but they'd be stupid to consider it that way in trade negotiations. If I'm taking Datsyuk I'm telling Detroit that I'm doing them a huge favor absorbing your dump, not the other way around. Don't think any team is desperate enough to hit the floor to take his contract for cheap. NJD needs 9M but they also have some RFAs to sign and could dip into the UFA pool and/or look for a different cap dump elsewhere.

I'm sure Kenny is willing to retain salary if need be, frankly the pressing concerns are DDK and Mrazek, no matter how much people are talking up the idea of a run at stamkos. 5m extra would keep them long term.

The other thing that would help immensely is obviously getting rid of Jimmy which definitely means retained salary, but with the way Mrazek fell off at the end last season I bet Jimmy stays at least one more.

are u sure his salary doesnt have to be paid
the site im looking at says his extension kicked in last year n hes 37
that would make him 36 when he got the contract no?
even if it was the season before hes still 35 so it should be a 35+ contract

and flyers had to pay prongers contract salary becasue 35+

No. Flyers are paying prongers contract because he's "not retired." 35+ only applies to cap space if the player retires.
