How do you figure?
Really the only thing that changed is Schmidt in and Tanev out.
Now, in a vacuum, Schmidt is a clear upgrade but when you consider the role Tanev played with the team, being the perfect partner for Hughes both on and off the ice, I don't know how large that gap is.
If Benning worked that cap so that he could retain Tanev and make that same trade for Schmidt, that would have been a big upgrade:
Hughes - Tanev
Edler - Schmidt
Whoever - Myers
https://www.vancouverisawesome.com/canucks-hockey/edler-and-schmidt-are-one-of-the-nhls-best-defence-pairings-canucks-from-porous-to-stingy-3443346well for starters, edler/Schmidt is one of the best shutdown pairing in the NHL, playing against the best/elite competition and edler is having the most success with him in his career, higher than playing with the sedins in his prime.
tanev is gone, time to move on lol, hes helping hanafin a lot more than he did hughes. Benn is no tanev, but he has been showing better results with hughes rn, than tanev/hughes combo from last season.
i would not want tanny for the next 4 years for that contract either
myers made juolevi look like an NHLer, looks like they figured out their roles and they're both looking a lot better than ever
i think a lot of people are downplaying how much of a huge upgrade schmidt is to tanev, despite schmidt not having the same pt output which is expected going from vegas to lolnucks. Even if he doesn't put up the points, he's still a huge upgrade over tanev because of his mobility and ability to get the puck out. Being one of the best shutdown pairing in the NHL with Schmidt currently trolling and struggling, think about that for a minute lol. While Tanev goes to a better team, & made hanafin better, it still didn't stop his team getting steamrolled by the canucks and oilers
