I dont see much of a reason why Seattle would care about holtby, but having only a 2yr deal is the worst thing.

cuz the rule is that you need at least 1 goalie exposed, and it's certainly not gonna be demko.
canucks could've signed some rand cheap goalie to expose, but that'd do more harm for demko than developing him properly and signing that rando goalie to 2 year would be wtf lol

holtby looked better than demko to start the season, but now it's flipped.
also less chance of motte being picked up

The 2nd year on Holtby's deal is total ass tho, still going to be cap crunched into next season and we might lose other pieces because of it.

if they signed holtby for 1 year, he wouldnt be eligible to expose in the draft

what's terrible in hindsight is that between him and Markstrom it's only a 1.8M difference. if the team wasn't so beyond cap fucked this season we could've just kept Markstrom, let Seattle pick him for free then have maximum room for the re-signings next season.

now not only we don't have Markstrom carrying this team's passengers today but we're going to be stuck wiith Holtby's caphit when we're trying to give raises to our youngsters. we'll have 20M but Hughes/Pettersson/Demko will take up most of it. might end up having to settle for a bridge when we could've locked up the core longterm in good contracts, and/or lose even more complimentary pieces like Pearson and Edler who we can't replace short term.

it's a good microcosm of Benning's nonexistent cap management where we overpay for shit and we can't even give good players what they deserve.

Problem with that is markstrom wanted nmc, which would force us to protect him and give up Demko.

All the important guys are RFA so Benning has all the leverage, and gear has been pretty good resigning our players. If Pearson demands more than 3.5m x 2, I would let him walk and hope Podkolzin can fill. Pearson was overpaid and underperforming with his current caphit. I'm sure he likes playing with horvat since he's producing like a 2nd liner. Edler would probably just sign 1 year deals from here on out, and he seems to only want to stay in Vancouver so I won't be surprised if he signs cheap if there's cap issues

honestly if the only way to have kept Marky was to give him the NMC then that should've been the way. he's in his prime and performing above his paygrade, as he had the past 2-3 seasons - and might've signed for a bit less with us. Demko would've fetched a decent return in a trade, and would've needed to be shipped off anyways due to the cap after this season - Seattle or not.
