Doug MacLean on HC@12 suggesting that good players that are left unprotected might not be taken at the expansion draft because GMs will do each other favors.

He was involved in a draft, so he does have first hand, he might have been dumb for listening to other GMs though

That's how it happened in the cbj/wild expansion. Buffalo and SJS traded future considerations in exchange for not picking Hasek, Biron, and nabby.

I heard he could play 48 hours after being cleared for contact so maybe game 2.
