I like the idea of putting a defensive d-man with Hughes. Let him go full tilt with a bit of leeway to take chances. He is such a fine skater he usually gets back into the play if he makes a mistake anyways.

Schmidt takes a lot of pressure off Hughes. It also improves the Canucks ability to get the matchups they want.

The bottom pair is going to have lots of competition. It is going to force everyone wanting a spot to go above and beyond their normal level of play.

I think the young guys get a chance to start the season. Benn is going to be on the taxi squad imo. Someone like Juolevi is not going to sit there gathering dust. He needs to play.

Would not be surprised if it is Juolevi + one other younger player in the last spot with older veterans sitting by incase of injury or a slip in play. With our D-core I don't expect to have the first 6 healthy most of the time so others will need to step in.

I still don't have high hopes for this D-core but if they can just be average 5 on 5 I would be happy. Special teams should be a stronger suite on D.

With Hamonic, I'm much more concerned about the bottom 6, its Soooo bad. At least 3rd pairing can be limited to 8 to 12min. Edler and Schmidt will probably be the new shutdown/matchup roles freeing up Hughes.

I have to agree. I am pretty confident in the top two pairs actually.

The problem is that is a lot of minutes to expect from the top 4 if you have to play the 3rd pair limited time due to their lack of ability/experience.

If Myers could hang with Hughes that would be such a huge boon to the back end. But I fear Hughes and Schmidt will be ridden until their wheels fall off. Edler-Myers will be a shitshow more often than not because they can't be sheltered.

So in day 1 camp, Hoglander and Rathbone both stood out and didn't look out of place. As expected by jbone! I hope he continues to stand out and make the team. As much as I wanted juolevi to make the team, I feel like he needs to continue developing and eventually replace edler.
Jbones skating is smooth as butter, basically Hughes and Schmidt lite. Imagine teams having to deal with 3 of them in every pair lmao.

Here's jbone

Hoglander played with horvat and Pearson, and surprisingly didn't look out of place either. A lot of clips by Faber on his Twitter.

Eriksson used to always be in good shape when attending camp, and gave it his all and full of effort. However he wasn't this time, and looked unmotivated and not interested nor engaged. Is he done? Finally accepting that he's donzoes and just collect them checks?

day 2, hoglander continues to impress with horvat/pearson.

[Drance]: Going over my notes and reflecting on Day 2 of #Canucks camp. Watching Schmidt with the Lotto Line is the first time I legitimately saw a path for VAN to maintain last seasons progress.

So group a consisting of lotto line and edler/Schmidt bested horvat line and Hughes.

Lotto line apparently looked like they were in mid season form, insane chemistry and dominated whenever they were on the ice. Boeser got 2 goals past Demko, a nice breakaway pass made by Schmidt. Cross seam pass by jt Miller to Petey to 1 timer in tough angle. Hoglander didn't play much with horvat this time, cuz of scrambled lines but he continued to showcase he belongs in the NHL. He was able to make good passes, protect puck well, win board battles, edler tried to take the puck away from him but Hog used his low center gravity and edgework to shield the puck and make a nice pass instead etc.

Rathbone showed dynamic skills once again, but is too raw and needs more time to develop under the pro system. He tries to do too much at times, but that's an easy fix. So I think at this point juolevi will be the one making the 3rd pairi, since he's a lot more stable and reliable despite being "invisible" and isn't as dynamic as Rathbone.

Is Juolevi looking like an NHL'er, or just "stable" relative to weak competition?

I guess we won't know til he plays in the NHL, but I think he will be fine. He's really only competing against rathbone and Benn imo.

Hoglander impresses yet again, he made a sick play for give and go with Roussel and scored a goal.

He juked the fuck out of virtanen along the boards to make a play

He assisted horvat with a goal from edler's bad turnover.

He stole the damn puck from ELIAS PETTERSSSSSONNN

He's now showing good chemistry with Hughes

I think this dude is making the team, after consecutive stand out performances in camp everyday lol
