So the athletics confirmed with Canucks org and Ferlands agent that they will release a statement about Ferland in the future.

However, unofficially for now this is what drance reports

Ferland isn’t expected to be able to compete in a 2021 campaign, meaning he’ll likely be placed on LTI, and that opens up some flexibility for the Canucks to spend over the upper limit of the salary cap by the full amount of Ferland’s $3.5 million cap hit.

Good for the team and Ferlands life. Bad news for his career.

With the cap relief, I hope they sign Hamonic to offset the loss by tanev and add more depth to the backend.

Aquillini's can afford to pay him his full contract I would imagine haha.

He is a competitor and I am sure he does not want to leave the game but he should.

It is a tragic end for many pro athletes suffering from CTE. Hope he can live a prosperous life after hockey.

The Canucks have a few angles they can play when it comes to bolstering the defense.

Personally I hope to see them take advantage of the expansion draft. They should target teams with a stacked D core. These teams know they will get pilfered, so maybe the Canucks can swoop in and get someone cheap.

Impressed by Podkolzin yet again, held scoreless on scoresheet but damn he's elite playing hockey the right way at such a young age.
He's being very selfless and trying to play to win for his country than boosting his own personal stats. His foundation of the game is so elite such a young age, it can only get better as he becomes older. I wish there was a way to control the camera feed to watch players without the puck LOL it's crazy he does the little things right when he doesn't have the puck. Green will fucking love this kid, it's literally the type of player he always seem to want haha
Everytime he's on the ice, he has the ability to control the game and pace. His strength and stance reminds me of Crosby cuz no one seems to be able to get the puck off him with ease, also his relentless style of constant forechecking/backchecking is fucking dope. Definitely will be one of those players that are "tough/annoying to play against." Also, Canucks PK group got weaker and he will be another player that will be core to the PK other than Beagle and Motte. His hockey IQ seems great too, as he doesn't make much mistakes and always seem to execute a perfect plan when he has the puck.
He could've had 2 points today if his teammates didn't whiff on ezpz passes for ezpz goals, here's one of the gifts lol

I really don't see us making the playoffs. We only got worse in every way. Will be hilarious to see Calgary fail with our team though

ye our team overachieved last season because of the crazy power play efficiency, our PP2 actually produced higher rate than our PP1 and our PP1 is no joke lol. Rare to see a team that gets destroyed in 5v5 make playoffs.
Canucks are very top heavy team, i think their top 6 and top 4 D is good but the bottom 6 and 3rd pairing are very questionable and worst in the league. Basically the Canucks won't be legit contenders til 2 more years when bottom 6 gets cleared out and replaced by much better players.

Elliotte Friedman: Rumblings that Travis Hamonic will go to VAN on a PTO

decent enough to replace tanev/add depth, not depend on unknowns for 3rd pairing

It is official now.

He logged a lot of ice time in Calgary. He should be a decent depth guy like you said.

Also can be used to push Jordie Benn into shaping up.

Hopefully Schmidt turns out to be a real asset. This defense still looks rough.

While still not great, I think the defense is so much better than last season.

Having another 1-2% elite puck in carry dmen is huge to greens system. So not only teams have to get rekt by Hughes, they gotta also be prepared for Schmidt.

Lost stecher which sucks, as he was a reliable 3rd pairing and always gave his 110% but his small stature limited him at times. Adding Hamonic gives us more insurance when players get injured and flexibility to use with Hughes to replace tanev, or if the younger guys don't end up working out. I'm hoping Rathbone steals the show at camp and perform at least like a NHL player like fox and Marino did, although I feel like it's juolevi's spot to lose.

Hughes - hamonic
Edler - schmidt
Juolevi - myers
Benn

I think myers will play with Hughes, similarly to last season for oZone deployments since they had the best corsi and advanced stats together, but defensively Hughes will probably be paired with Hamonic like how tanev was used.

I like the idea of putting a defensive d-man with Hughes. Let him go full tilt with a bit of leeway to take chances. He is such a fine skater he usually gets back into the play if he makes a mistake anyways.

Schmidt takes a lot of pressure off Hughes. It also improves the Canucks ability to get the matchups they want.

The bottom pair is going to have lots of competition. It is going to force everyone wanting a spot to go above and beyond their normal level of play.

I think the young guys get a chance to start the season. Benn is going to be on the taxi squad imo. Someone like Juolevi is not going to sit there gathering dust. He needs to play.

Would not be surprised if it is Juolevi + one other younger player in the last spot with older veterans sitting by incase of injury or a slip in play. With our D-core I don't expect to have the first 6 healthy most of the time so others will need to step in.

I still don't have high hopes for this D-core but if they can just be average 5 on 5 I would be happy. Special teams should be a stronger suite on D.
