The problem with hit while Kassian was battling for a loose puck as he came around the net is every winger could do that on every shift if they wanted to abandon their defenseman coverage. The NHL made it clear to players line Raffi Torres and Matt Cooke they wanted wingers charging from the blue line to stop those kinda hits even if it was technically a clean hit. And those hits have all but disappeared. It’s 100% a predatory hit. Kassian is tied up with another forward battling for a puck. I also don’t see how it’s not a head shot , his first point of contact is Kassians neck.
The wheel of justice is that hit, if you wanna play old time hockey, like those hits are you better be ready to answer the bell.
The Torres and Cooke hits that I remember and resulted in suspensions were blindside hits that were out of the primary vision of the player who was hit.
He never came at him from an angle. The hit was straight on, not coming in from the side with a low chance to realize someone was coming.
You keep your head down for a prolonged period and bad things will happen. There has to be some onus on the player to protect themselves and have awareness of their surroundings imo.
When your head is down it is more likely that it will be involved in the contact. You can say it is a predatory hit, sure. The likelyhood of injury occurring with a hit that heavy on an unsuspecting player is high risk for sure but I don't see how it is, or should be an illegal hit.
The game is predatory in itself and everyone is trying to win the game. Doing what you can to win within the rules in no crime imo. Kassian needs to have more awareness and if someone lays a clean hit on him it is unreasonable for him to think he in entitled to fight. That logic is patently false.
The suspension is a total joke in my eyes as players have gotten away with far worse. Again the wheel of the justice is a complete farce.
Just looking forward to there next meeting. I know some will disagree with me but that is how I see it.
TLDR: Hits were clean, players should not be obligated to fight someone after they lay a clean hit, Suspension was not justified.
