Well time to overpay for Barrie.

I also like how Benning didn't buy anyone out, he's planning to clear all the shit contracts by letting them expire. Also he didn't decide to split 50% of Petey and Hughes bonuses and just pay them in full this season.

This makes me feel better. Been some tough choices but its better to let guys go if they are getting the big money/term contracts elsewhere.

yeah doesnt make sense for our team atm to give out term to aging players.
It's set up perfectly for 2022 season to compete, as all anchor contracts and lu penalty are gone, with Hughes/Petey locked up and rest of the core locked up for another year.
If Canucks get Barrie on short term, im assuming 2 years since that seems to be the plan. it's not too bad imo im still expecting to regress but not by much

Miller - Petey - Boeser
Pearson - Horvat - Ferland/Leivo
Roussel - Gaudette - Virtanen/MacEwen
Motte - Beagle - Sutter

Hughes - Myers
Edler - Barrie
Benn/Juolevi - Chatfield (juolevi and chatfield meshed well together in the AHL)

Holtby/Demko

Our biggest problem last season was no one was able to help Hughes bring the puck out of their zone with ease,
Barrie would help , and edler is still reliable and a glue to our d core.
dont forget Myers and Hughes had the best performance with each other last season, but Green had to break em up to make Tanev more useful and balance the minutes.

Hughes become extremely good when playing with Myers, and Myers also makes most of his teammates better when he's on the ice.
He only makes the bottom 6 and players like benn do worse but that's expected as Green deployed him the most against elite competition last season.

With Barrie off the table...

Benning will be out of my shit list if he gets David Savard for cheap. Very Tanev like player, cap hit about the same, only a year left so he can walk to make room for the big RFA deals.

Nvm with Stecher gone we really will field an AHL blueline and I don't trust Benning to trade without getting fleeced.

So what options are left on defense to go after?

Or is it time to just say fuck it, give the young guys a chance and hope for the best?

I think that's what he said like a month ago, give his prospects a chance. He feels macewen, juolevi and chatfield are ready to play in the NHL. I didn't think he meant it though, lmao

TvR, Savard, vatanen (although it seems they aren't interested in him), greene

At this point it's best to just accept we're going to take a step back next year (barring miracle seasons by unexpected players).

As much as it sucks to take a step back in year 7 of the rebuild, it would be the wise thing over making panic transactions to try to salvage the season.

I agree.

Who knows the Canucks got a taste of playoff hockey now.

Maybe they will be highly motivated and despite some setbacks fight there way into a bottom playoff spot.

Although I have doubts on that because both Calgary and Edmonton improved (at least for the short term) which lowers our chances.

Right now the blue line is hilariously bad. We literally have no RHD who can play either tough minutes or log a lot of ice time without fucking up. Myers is what he is, he's worth half his cap hit and will never be a legit workhorse. We have a lot of tape on Chatfield and Rathbone and these guys simply can't fill the gaping void left even if they take major steps forward. Maybe Juolevi can do his part, but even thats a long shot. Oh, and Edler is old and his wheels can fall off any time. If Benning makes no moves we will, disgustingly, have the worst blueline in the league despite having the best young defenseman.

And I don't buy that we're going to necessarily be better in the long run even if we semi tank the next two seasons. While ofc Petey and Hughes are young, Horvat, Boeser and Miller are all in their prime right now and are light on the cap relative to their contributions. We will probably be squeezed out from 1-2 of them soon after Hughes and Petey reup and that's where we pray to the almighty that Podz and Hoglander can contribute while they're on their ELCs. And we have absolutely no one who projects as Top 4 Dmen, specially on the right. Juolevi can maybe redeem himself and Rafferty pans out, but they're long shots. Either we get lottery picks to solve that issue or we're fucked.

I would've preferred to keep Marky and trade Demko, but Benning at least handled the goalie situation in an acceptable way. Maybe you can argue that we couldn't afford to keep Tanev. And there are no excuses for hardballing Stecher out of town. Either way, these decisions were forced because Benning gave way too much money to veterans looking for retirement contracts. As a result, we lost loyal players who just wanted to be paid their worth and stay in town. Not only our defense looks fucked right now, but the situation in the locker room - watching character guys get penny pinched while underperforming veterans stack cash - is probably worse right now.

Yeah I know I'm a negative Nancy, but this was miles and miles coming. Benning is a fucking idiot who doesn't know he's a fucking idiot and that has never changed.

This is something I have not taken much stock on. You are right. Locker room morale/chemistry is something that has to be considered.

It was clear Marky was a beloved team mate and terrific person off the ice. That is going to be tough to replace along with his on ice contributions.

Stecher and Tanev both worked extremely hard and sacrificed so much in the playoffs. We are down a solid locker room presence and two guys with a warriors attitude.

Bo Horvat is going to have to really show why he was given the C now. He has been a leader by example, doing the little things right, showing up during big games and playing the tough matchups.

Now he is going to have to keep the team unified.

I am unsure of Benning at this point. I will let the dust settle, as more moves could be happening before I make comments on him.
