Stecher has all the leverage now that he can just walk into UFA. Arbitration meant he wouldn't be able to do that. If Benning really wanted to lock him up he would've gotten it done before losing arbitration. It would've been "this is my offer, if you don't like it the arbitrator will decide" but now it's "this is my offer, and I guess you can go get paid elsewhere if you don't like it". Stecher can easily get 3+ in the open market with term and the least he could get from arbitration was 2.35, so even if the intention was to eventually let go of him it would infinitely make more sense to sign/let arbitrator award and then look for a trade while the Canucks were still entitled to his services. Now he doesn't have to sign with us and Benning will probably have to make a better offer because competent RHD (even if unspectacular) don't grow in trees.

And even if Stecher wants to stay in Vancouver, all it takes for him to change his mind is a needy team overpaying. Again, he's not exactly a goon winger desperate for a home - he's an asset to just about any team in the league.

/e Joel Edmunson was awarded under 3 and DeMelo signed for 3, so if you hear local media speculating Stecher would be awarded more it's complete PR damage control bullshit.

what i meant is that Benning probably could only offer less than he currently makes 2.3mil, without knowing the situation with OEL, Markstrom etc. etc. It also makes more sense to offer him a contract after the dust settles and knows exactly what he has to work with. Here's 2.1m, it's the most i can give as you can see from our cap space. It's your choice to take this offer and stay with us, or you take 2.5-3.5m offer elsewhere as you deserve it.

Benning can't offer less than 2.3 if he qualified, and if offered the same amount, stecher would go to arbitration and the canucks will have to pay him whatever number that may be. Unless they decide not to, and he goes to FA anyway.

Very early to tell, but here are pronmans grading of the canucks

GRADE D
The Canucks didn’t have a pick until 82, so it was always going to be tough to add talent. I have time for Joni Jurmo. I’m not his biggest fan, but I appreciate how good an athlete he is and what he could become. They didn’t make a lot of picks that really excite me. I don’t think this draft made a big dent in improving their pipeline.

Here's Judd brackett working magic in such a short time with his new crew

B plus
Getting Marco Rossi is a big piece, as a player who projects as a first-line forward and an important young piece for any team. On Day 2, I thought the Wild maximized their picks, getting four players in Marat Khusnutdinov, Ryan O’Rourke, Daemon Hunt and Pavel Novak who have solid or better chances to become NHL players.

Scout experts say Canucks got good value out of the limited picks they had tho, picking players that should've gone much earlier etc.

Talked to GM Benning late today about lack of progress on Markstrom+others. “We’re going to be prudent and smart. We can go into free agency and try to fill the holes we need to fill. Whether it’s players from within or through free agency, we still have those avenues.”

OH geez not the FA

Not surprised, still disappointed Benning never learns. He has 0 understanding of leverage and he's basically told our pending FA's they're all expandable. There will be a bidding war for most if not all of them.

I thought maybe gm's would have some damn sense. Not even close.

Covid financial crisis... The cap remaining flat, and likely to stagnate for some time. Despite those facts we already have some moronic signings setting the bar for the FA market.

It just amazes me that GM'S give out long term contracts like candy when it has been clearly demonstrated numerous times how high the cost is to trade off a boat anchor contract.

As per usual. You go to the FA market you overpay. Should have got the OEL negotiations done and enforced a strict deadline on Arizona. Benning had ALL the leverage in that situation and did not put the screws to them.

Missed opportunity. Now because he muddled around with that it left other pieces unresolved and assets will either be lost or overpaid to retain.

I am pretty pissed off with this shoddy attempt at keeping the core together.

Could have been handled much better.

Best case scenario would be Krug re-signing with the Bruins tomorrow so that the Canucks are the only team left on OEL's list but that's obviously not going to happen as Krug will almost surely test the UFA market.

With the reports that have come out suggesting that there is a lot of interest on the players' side in signing in Vancouver (both our UFA's and others around the league), seems like Benning is pretty confident that he can get the work he needs done without losing out.

He must be really sure that guys like Toffoli and Tanev will do everything in their power to stay.

It's a risky game, we'll see.

If markstrom leaves, it ends 20yr goalie cycle with Florida lol, auld, lu, markstrom. So I guess it's safe to assume bobrovsky is coming to Vancouver guise to continue the cycle

Well the opportunity knocks for Canuck d-men in the system looking for a chance to make it to the big leagues.

I also like how Benning didn't buy anyone out, he's planning to clear all the shit contracts by letting them expire. Also he didn't decide to split 50% of Petey and Hughes bonuses and just pay them in full this season.

Tanev model
