that's probably what he wants to try do, Virtanen + 3/4/5 pick or any other RFA that he feels is replaceable.
Seeing how Tanev and Toffoli both wanna stay in Van, especially tanev, i think they'll take a slight discount to stay. The problem is Markstrom. He deserves a term contract, since it will basically be his last $$$$. If Canucks sign him to like 5 yr deal, that means Demko would want out eventually because every goalie wants to be a starter if they could be. It would be perfect if Marky signs for 2yrs, but it wont make sense for Markstrom, 3 is too risky for him as well. If Canucks let Markstrom go, Demko really needs to prove he can be godlike throughout the season playing 50-60games, then find another decent backup goalie. Problem is, with the amount of high danger shots the canucks give, and just shots in general, i feel like the backup goalie is gonna have a bad time. Even Demko, as much as he was godtier, i can't see him playing like that for 50+ games yet.
Another problem is Markstrom will probably want a NTC. He does not want to be traded to a team that is not competitive down the road if Demko emerges. This contract will be his last attempt to be a starter for a team with a chance so there is no way he will risk getting shipped out to a lesser team.
Furthermore if Markstrom gets his NTC it would leave Demko exposed to Seattle so he would most likely need to be traded out of desperation of being pilfered. Of course other gm's will know that and the trade value takes a huge hit.
The Canucks are going to get pinned by that situation as well. Seattle coming into the league could not have come at a worse time for the Canucks.
Also we have Domingue if one of those goalies gets shipped out as the backup.... Not a good situation.
