It's clear Virtanen isn't in the coach's good books. If they intend to keep Green around, which I assume they do, Virtanen might be out.

Probably sucks that we will have to sell him for what he is now instead of what he could be.

Ya the trade value will be low, especially if he goes to arbitration.

Sad to think he may just be fodder in a trade to try to dump Eriksson's burden of a contract away.

So based on the shit Benning said this afternoon

- Isn't planning to move 1st/2nd rd picks to get rid of contracts
- May have to make tough decision on RFA's to make space or use as a sweetener to get rid of anchor contract. "We're going to have to make some tough decisions maybe even on some young players."
- thinks juolevi is ready to play full time next season

i can see virtanen not coming back, i think benning likes stecher so he might stay although i think he should also be used as a trade if it means to offload anchor.

i think gaudette stays even though he was hella exposed in playoffs, but it was his first playoffs and still raw and canucks don't have a 3c other than him.

Lind also looked good in the brief 3rd/4th line duty during training camp, he would be awesome with motte or 3rd line imo.

juolevi and rathbone next season is exciting.

if benning somehow manages to offload eriksson, he wins even if it means to lose someone like virtanen or an RFA, since it will allow toffoli, tanev and marky all to come back.

tanev and toffoli agents say that they wanna stay in vancouver and is willing to negotiate, to see what works.

If Benning wants to keep either Tanev or Markstrom he has to bundle picks to offload some of the bad contracts. Retaining Toffoli is a pipedream.

that's probably what he wants to try do, Virtanen + 3/4/5 pick or any other RFA that he feels is replaceable.

Seeing how Tanev and Toffoli both wanna stay in Van, especially tanev, i think they'll take a slight discount to stay. The problem is Markstrom. He deserves a term contract, since it will basically be his last $$$$. If Canucks sign him to like 5 yr deal, that means Demko would want out eventually because every goalie wants to be a starter if they could be. It would be perfect if Marky signs for 2yrs, but it wont make sense for Markstrom, 3 is too risky for him as well. If Canucks let Markstrom go, Demko really needs to prove he can be godlike throughout the season playing 50-60games, then find another decent backup goalie. Problem is, with the amount of high danger shots the canucks give, and just shots in general, i feel like the backup goalie is gonna have a bad time. Even Demko, as much as he was godtier, i can't see him playing like that for 50+ games yet.

I cant see Toffoli signing with us either.

We are already down a 1st and second this year.

I see the push to sign Toffoli because you don't want the 2nd rounder to be for a rental but that is how it often works at the deadline. I just don't see how he fits into the cap.

Losing a first for Miller is still way worth it because he alone brought the team to another level and he is signed on a good contract

it's not just a push to let 2nd rd go to waste, he's a legit top 6 player in the league. Without him, it's back to having a hole up there, and gotta rely on virtanen, leivo, etc.etc. to fill.

Another problem is Markstrom will probably want a NTC. He does not want to be traded to a team that is not competitive down the road if Demko emerges. This contract will be his last attempt to be a starter for a team with a chance so there is no way he will risk getting shipped out to a lesser team.

Furthermore if Markstrom gets his NTC it would leave Demko exposed to Seattle so he would most likely need to be traded out of desperation of being pilfered. Of course other gm's will know that and the trade value takes a huge hit.

The Canucks are going to get pinned by that situation as well. Seattle coming into the league could not have come at a worse time for the Canucks.

Also we have Domingue if one of those goalies gets shipped out as the backup.... Not a good situation.

I agree it is a hole.

I don't think Virtanen can fill it either for reasons discussed earlier; yet his cap hit is probably going to get pushed up from arbitration.

I think he gets moved out in an attempt to keep Toffoli/ dump eriksson but that might not be enough.

you mean NMC?

NTC can still allow markstrom to be exposed, maybe they can give him like a 10 team NTC or something.

Jim Benning on Markstrom and Demko: We could still go into the season with both of them next year… at next year’s trade deadline we can decide to… make moves so we don’t lose one of them to expansion… I got a meeting set up tomorrow with Ian Clark… and we’re going to go through all that

By next year's deadline goalies will have pretty much 0 value, there will be plenty of good ones on the market due to the flat cap and the expansion draft. Andersen, Allen, Binnington, Grubauer and Mrazek are all UFAs in 2021 and most of them will walk. Then you have teams like us with two good goalies who have to get rid of one of them.
