Because balancing partying and studying is just sooo hard.
You say that now before you've truly started classes. I know plenty of people who thought the same thing than suddenly its the end of Christmas Holidays, they get their marks back and they failed two classes, and only passed two because they had to drop one mid semester due to poor marks.

Happens a lot, I was lucky. Hit a 2.8 out of 4 my first semester and got on probation (honors college). Got shit together and managed a 3.5 overall but it's really easy to fuck up. You get the people who can study 20 minutes and pass the test vs people who take longer and that's really where the divide happens. Then the people who studied 20 minutes burn out and the guys who decided not to party become Bill Gates and Steve Jobs.
Yeah, my fiancée messed up big time her first semester. Thought she could balance social and academic life, she couldn't. She's not stupid either. Ends up failing multiple classes first semester and gets put on Academic Probation. She made them up, got back on her feet, decided to commute to Hamilton every morning instead of living with friends near campus. Of my friends that went to University, I'd say probably half messed up first year.
Never went to University so I have no personal experience but I know plenty of people who screwed up, and I can't understand why. Priorities should be priorities. In the US that should be magnified considering you are paying significantly more for schooling than in Canada. $3000 for a semester in Ontario (Which is the highest in Canada) isn't so bad. $20,000 at certain American schools? That's insane.
