They would be fighting amongst themselves, which is why it's a huge no when you're breaking your own union agreement. The otherside loves this, because they can use it as an ammunition for their next contract and also don't have to do anything but watch the players fight against each other. Instead of being nhl VS union it's union VS union.
Ofc leafs players would prefer to fly at 1030pm instead of 5am, since it gives them slight advantage and convinience. Other teams in similar situation most likely sucked it up cuz it's in their agreement, instead of trying to break it for their own benefit while others have to suffer. NHL can now have the option to use this as an example to take an extra day off away from the players, and tell them that they should work on 26th because it seems like select teams don't mind breaking their own agreement and do not mind travelling on that day. They can also argue less players will less likely wanna travel on Christmas and just suck it up and wait to travel 5am on 26th etc. This causes unnecessary negotiations in their next CBA meeting.
Salty players will grieve this to their union player reps and discuss this, like why did leafs players get to do that? We don't mind doing it either, it's the org that's paying 100k, not us and at least we will be more rested for the game next day. So wtf?! Union reps will have to say we shdnt the NHL will easily make us work on boxing day since many of us don't seem to mind travelling on our off day we negotiated for.
