That collapse was one of the few things that went right for us this year.

the funny part is that it coulda been like 10-2 for preds, but marky was insane as usual making ton of highlight saves, he easily made 8 or 9 crazy saves this game
2 of their 3 goals are controversial tho, ref blows whistle cuz he didnt see the puck for about couple seconds when marky had it and it trickles in and it still counts. 2nd goal, marky had no chance, but preds player was still clearly in contact to prevent marky from moving the other way before the puck went into the net. 3rd goal isn't controversial, but stetcher tipped that in. pretty good game

The Canucks will play their final game tomorrow.

Overall I was pleasantly surprised with this season.

Key players made great strides and overall I would say the team exceeded expectations despite missing the playoffs.

As for the direction going forward this is what I would like to see:

The goal next season should be making the playoffs. I think we were close this year and with some additions I see making the playoffs as being a realistic goal.

Focus on acquiring a power forward who can add toughness, drive the net and bolster the powerplay. Ideally Jake Virtanen would evolve into this role but despite some progress being made he is not there yet.

If he manages to reach that point imagine the Canucks having the scoring ability of Pettersson, Boeser and Horvat coupled with the potential emergence of Virtanen and another proven power forward. That is a scary top 6.

I Would not mind trading the first round pick (so long as it is not Kaapo or Hughes) in a package deal that brings us back this kind of player so long as he has good years left in him and is not a contract liability.

At this point I would say most, if not all of the players who find themselves in the bottom 6 are replaceable parts. So long as they are decent skaters and can hold there own defensively that should be enough to round out the forward roster.

We have the depth to deal with injuries to the bottom 6, the hope however is one of those bottom 6 guys can step up and move into a top 6 role when required.

The other obvious need is to shore up the defense. I would not mind keeping Edler if the price is right. As much as I like to bash him I think he is someone we should keep around so long as he does not pursue a long term contract that will hurt us in the long run.

He even showed an offensive resurgence toward the end of the season which was nice to see.

Ideally we make a move and acquire a physical d-man that can shut down the other teams elite forwards. It was shown numerous times this season that the firepower of other teams was just too much to handle for our d pairings. If you want to be a playoff team, and in the future a contender that has to change.

Again I have no problems trading picks to land this type of player.

On a positive note, despite a small sample size I am pretty confident Hughes is going to help out a lot quarterbacking the powerplay. He is shifty, protects the puck well going east to west despite his size and appears to have the ability to draw in the opposition, opening up others for prime scoring chances.

With all that being said I think the team is headed in a great direction. Markstrom really turned it up after Neilson was traded and I feel he will look even better as the team in front of him improves as well.

With some additions and tweaks I see this team being in the playoffs next season. Once again it is an exciting time to be a Canucks fan!

Eh I think canucks are still a bit off from playoffs.
They need much better defense support imo.
I can see them make playoffs if they sign panarin and ek and they click well, with markstrom consistently performing like he did post December.

Despite the Canucks finishing slightly better than last season, it's actually a huge improvement because they literally performed well enough to fill the huge void left by 2 retired superstars.

I love the work ethic this team has from the young guys, like Petey, stetcher, horvat they wanna prove it to themselves and always takes that extra step to get better. Stetcher is awesome, when he tipped that goal in for the loss, apparently he was pissed off as hell. Not like mad for 1hr and cool off kinda thing, but extremely mad at himself for hours and using that anger to motivate himself to be even better for next day at practice. He knows he lacks the offense side of his game , so he focused mostly on defense and other part of his game this season to stay relevant. He proved he's here to stay, and be counted on crucial moments despite his small structure. I think this is the reason why the Oilers finished worse than the Canucks despite having 2 players with 100pts w/ rnh having similar same amount of pts as Petey, cuz they seem to have motivational work ethic issues. Their coach saying that the coach shdnt want it more than the players at this point of the year says it all

Apparently the Canucks are aggressively looking for president of hockey ops, I wish they gave Gillis that role, another chance ,and he keeps Benning as the Gm to do his thing, but Gillis helps with negotiating contracts

So true. The work ethic is key. Players who absolutely hate to lose make those around them better because if you care you are going to try to raise your effort level to match everyone else. If anybody is not giving full effort they will find themselves out of place, which is the way it should be.

Maybe I am a bit optimistic but from what I have seen this year I believe the foundation, for the most part is in place. Certainly there is gaps in coverage but the team is in a great position overall.

I get the feeling Panarin would rather sign with FLA or a team that won't put much pressure on him. Vancouver media is relentless and apparently he wants to go somewhere with an established Russian community.

I would rather the Canucks go for a rugged d-man vs the offensive ability of EK. However if you can someone manage to land an elite FA why not. I just don't know if that is the best fit, considering the goal is most likely to groom Hughes to the the PP guy/offensive d -man.

I don't think either would sign with the Canucks lol

It'd be great to have ek and Hughes tho. Hughes can learn a lot from ek. I don't think Hughes can really learn much from any current canucks dmen cuz they don't play like him nor have the skating and puck handling skills he has..theyre alrdy teaching him edlers drop pass move, hurts me to watch that :(

Also nice to see horvat finally get a consistent winger for him in pearson. They look great together.

Pearson looks like a great pickup!

Really strong finish to the season.

Markstrom is going to get pushed to be even better. I like it.

Canucks in good shape for the future. Wish the Blues best of luck in the playoffs.
