That's a fair point. If there's truth to the rumour, I think what it really means is they want Ortio as the #1 next year.

They aren't going to trade for Talbot and not have him the #1. Talbot put up starter numbers.

no way they will, why would you commit to a long term approach to winning and then trade a great prospect who will eventually fill a hard to find top d spot.

Trading phaneuf makes the most sense to me, can you retain salary only for X years? or is it always for the length of the players contract? retaining some of fa9's salary for the first year or two would be fine as we will likely not be that close to cap if we are rebuilding properly.

I'm fine with them trying out Ortio next year, especially seeing as neither Ramo nor Hiller could hold onto their #1 spot for very long

If we had Talbot as a #1 with Ortio playing at least ~30 - 35 games I think it'd be better for him than to start playing a dedicated 50+

If the Flames are serious about Ortio becoming a starter, it's best to train him and develop his consistency instead of throwing him behind a team like Calgary's and saying good luck.

I agree with the logic, but I don't want to pay the asking price for Talbot solely for the purpose and grooming Ortio. I'd rather Ortio split time with Ramo or hiller.
