Welp, point is moot. Got an exhaust leak on dual exhaust, battery is gone, axle boot is damaged, need brakes and rotors, and a bunch of small shit.... gonna be about $1500 to make it street legal and it's a ~$2000 KBB value.

So.... new car for me! I'm allowed to drive it for 15 more days so time to start hitting the dealers.

Nah nah nah. Don't go to dealers, come buy my Porsche. I'll give you a good deal

No O.o I have to do a virginia safety and emissions inspection every year. During this year's inspection the found out the battery was bad along with all the other stuff.
It's a huge fine if I don't have an inspection sticker.

You need to do safety and emissions tests every year? In Ontario you only need e-tests every five or seven years and safety every time to license a car (In other words, when you buy or sell it).

Honestly if it weren't for the insurance I'd consider it lol. And yeah, every year - if I had passed the inspection I'd be good to drive through august of 2014 before I needed another one.
Probably gonna go for a 2-3 year lease on a focus/fusion/elantra type. Then I'll buy something another tier up at the end of the lease.

The insurance is ridiculous. They're crooks on normal cars, even worse on more expensive ones. Not sure what you're budget is though anyway, I don't do financing

That's crazy you have to do it every year. I guess it keeps cars that obviously shouldn't be on the road off but that's a bit of money. E-tests are only like $30 bucks but if you don't know a mechanic safeties can cost a bit of money. Those car's are nice cars you can get pretty cheap on a lease. Not bad car to have before moving on to something more expensive.

I don't really have a budget  it's more of a practicality thing. It would be pointless for me to get a Bimmy or a Porsche in a city where you average 8 miles an hour on a good day.
The car will be mostly for driving to visit my friend in PA or parents in michigan.

So if you wanted it you'd give me a check for right around what I paid for it? :P I agree it's not a very practical city car, even if this one is meant to be an executive car. Truth be told, only time I drive it is when I want to show off. For example, pick up my sister and her friends at the movie theatre then drop her off at my parents to rub it in their face they treated me like the black sheep yet I was the most successful of four children.

Given that, it be a great car for someone working in DC.

But yeah, save your money for now and get something nice but not going to drain your bank account. You've got decades to buy fancy cars and impress people. You can always get a cheap luxury car too, like an A4. Not that much more than a Fusion or Elantra.

I'm planning to move from government to private sector in around 3-5 years. At this point I really have no need to swoon clients or anything like that. That said I'm looking pretty seriously at a tesla... so sophisticated and the all electric is awesome, but I'm not sure it would be good for the drive to PA or Michigan due to the fact that they're still expanding supercharging stations.

Tesla's are really nice cars, be something I'd drive but I've never seen one in Canada. See them occasionally when I'm in the states but I guess they didn't sell many in Canada. Probably less than two dozen.
