He's 23 years old lol. They basically have him in the same position as Jonathan Quick 3 years ago. He gets hot and cold streaks, this is his first year with #1 starts, and it's only a two year contract. Perfect to keep him interested in being on the team while giving them more time to see if he develops into a higher consistency player. Not saying he'll be a quick in skill at the end but it's pretty standard, if not a it low for goalies in his position (some get what, 2.5-3m WITHOUT having carried the team to Eastern finals?)

Not to mention, if you've watched him over the past month, he's been the only caps player aside from Ribeiro who has been keeping them in the games. Both NJD games this past week, he was solid as fuck.
