Good. Neither deserves it. The team basically had 20m in wasted cap space due to injuries for half the season. If anything they need to get rid of some injury prone guys.
I know everyone loves Letang and thinks Pens would be crazy to trade him but he'd get a really good return and could really fill out the depth with reliable guys who don't miss games.

that or ship malkin off for some depth.

i honestly think that would be better.

It wouldn't be a bad idea, but the Crosby/Malkin 1-2 punch is so good. I agree that it makes it harder on them to have two guys paid over 8.5m but christ if they aren't worth every penny and more. On the other hand, mid-season acquisitions are harder to make and they have to build the team for day 1 as though Letang is gonna play 82 and be good for playoffs. That just hasn't happened for like 5 years.

well, malkin isnt worth every penny for a third to a half of the season. he gets dinged up and/or doesnt show up fairly often for a guy with his cap hit. plus, think of the return he'd get.

it would be a massive help for their depth issues.

i didnt realize patric hornqvists cap hit before now, worse than i thought.

pens are fine they just had some pretty key guys out on the back end
they have the guys for offense i think they just need a different coach to bring more offense out of them
i mean siht malkin got 0p and hes still got 111p in 101 playoff gp ... how does that happen?

When you're saying that exact sentence for 6 years straight though, something has to change. Pens have over 15000 man games lost since they won the cup. Maybe it's the medical staff but that would be alarming to me.

Agreed. The thing about Malkin is though, he's SO good he's hard to trade. He's worth two top line players and no one's gonna pay that, nor can the pens afford it. Also, with the defenseman market how it is now Letang is just more realistic for finding a trading partner.
I'm fine with Hornqvist at 4m, would be happier at 3m. He's the net-front presence pens have needed for years. Again though, I feel like it's a testament to their medical staff that he suddenly missed a big chunk of the season when he went to PIT and has never had that problem before..

its not like its going to change though every team hates the penguins and hits them extra hard

You can chalk a good bit of it to bad luck I guess, I mean three guys with blood clots (one with a stroke), Maatta with a fucking tumor and half the team with Mumps... but it just seems to me that after enough seasons, "bad luck" becomes "there's something wrong here and we need to figure it out."

i guess, but any logical gm will also realize that letang, as good as he is, misses a huge chunk of games. now that hes like 5 concussions in, he might also not get a big enough return to make it worth moving him.

yeah letang would get like 1/3 his value becasue hes lucky to play 2/3 a season
and they werent the only team to get mumps but yeah they had it pretty bad this year

you gotta imagine if dupuis was healthy he adds a decent chunk of offense to their roster too

Yeah. Honestly it may just be that their hand are are tied and they can't trade anyone without taking inferior return. I just don't think anyone can give anywhere near Malkin's value, whereas taking a bit less than Letang's value would be acceptable.
If you look at Toews and Kane, I'd argue Malkin is worth more than 10.5m in tomorrow's FA market. If he misses 20 games, call it 8m. Letang's worth exactly what he's paid, but he misses enough games that Pens aren't getting bang-for-buck. To me that makes him a must-trade.

I hope Dupuis comes back :\ When Crosby and Malkin were out Dupuis carried the team. He's a great player and seems to be a really good guy.
