The strike is actually pretty horrible for business. Before I sold my company, we moved and received most of our cheques through Canada Post. Now that has to all be hand delivered, or the other courier services will have to pick up that slack. I know quite a few other businesses that operate this way.

It's going to be bad. The indirect effects of this strike will be worse than the losses if they settled.

Maybe people will get with the times and switch to direct deposit.
So annoying, we still have like 3% of all government payments that our agency processes (~$50 billion per year) paid in check. Which means money is spent on paper, ink, printers, courier salaries, vehicles, gas, uniforms...

Such a waste of resources + poor use of taxpayer dollars when it could be done with a few clicks on a computer screen. The kicker is the majority of the folks who do it for us are in the same demographic as the people who freak out and want to limit government because of the deficit.

Well it's moving towards that direction anyway. It's slow but that's somewhat to be expected. I never used cheques for small stuff, usually just to pay a charge accounts. But for the most part my contracts still paid with cheques. Only toward the end were a few of the clients moving towards online banking. There's something about people being uncomfortable transferring large sums of money (over $100,000, but sometimes a lot less) over the Internet.

It depends on who you're interacting with. It takes two to be able to do everything online.

Legal makes sense to me, to an extent. It forces version control so if you're signing contracts or whatever you don't have to worry (as much) about someone tampering with a legally binding document.
But if you're gonna have someone mail you a check (on the government's dime) then just turn around and walk it right to the bank, as far as I'm concerned people like that are a major reason why we have such a huge deficit.

We're not allowed to put a line item in our budget that's "just in case we have to deal with a fucktard," because then that fucktard will rally his other fucktard friends and say we're budgeting money towards useless things. It's a terrible cycle.

for actauly legal documents it 100% makes sense.

I think they were also just behind though, even interacting with companies where it could be done online it wasnt they were paid in all cheques and payed for everything with cheques.
